I have a 69 Chevelle with bucket seats but no headrest. Can you install headrest on a seat that did not have them?

have to see photos of the seats to see if they are true 69-72 bucket seats. I have a friend who has a 69 Chevelle with 68 buckets in the car.

If you really mean "Can you install headrest exactly the same way the factory did on a seat that did not have them?" the answer is yes....but you would need to have a seat that already has all the headrest mounting components to transfer over, so why not just use that seat to begin with?

If I had a set of seats that had headrest I would just transfer the seat covers. I want to know if I can add them to seats that never had them?

I think that you will find that headrests became mandatory safety equipment after January 1, 1969. Before that they had an option code. Your car may already be correct, if that matters.

Perhaps they DID have the covers at one time, but were recovered and the headrests left off??? So maybe the pieces are still in there...

The headrests and latches are available "reproduction"... I know the earlier headrests (66-68) have mounting hardware available, but I don't recall seeing it for the 69 and up seats...

Yup, what Keith and Tony said is true. We run into this in our shop quite often. You should be able to feel the headrest holes through the upholstery material if they exist. If the padding is too thick to feel the holes, you will have to remove the seat backs and upholstery to see if they are there. If the holes are there, you can purchase repro headrest mounting hardware and correct year headrests from just about any good Chevelle supply catalog. If there are no holes, well..........then you will have to find the correct year bucket seats with headrests already on them. Hope this helps.

At least for the 68 model year, bucket seat headrests were a dollar-added option. Every set of 68 buckets I have ever dissected, had the structural provisions for headrests, whether installed or not. I cannot imagine why any 69 bucket, original or re-covered, would not at least, have the same structural provisions.
To answer your question... yes, you can install headrests onto 69 buckets that currently don't have them installed.

Thanks, I guess I should remove the backs and see what is there.

basically its just a hole in the upper portion of the seat, there is a nylon/plastic tube that slides into the hole that gets held in with 3? screws? I figured this out the hard way when I redid my seats in my 70 and in my rush to finish it up, I find the hardware for one of the seats laying there after i get done hog ringing the seat covers on. jim
