In our shop, we always remove the shifter and/or console and install the carpet right over the hole in the floor, then cut the smallest hole possible for the shifter or cable to come through the carpet. You will get a nice tight fit for the carpet and the console or shifter plate will look much better when re-installed over the new carpet.

Are you working on a 68-72 with a automatic horseshoe shifter? If so do not install the shifter and cut the carpet around it. You need the carpet to overlap the shifter base that mounts to the floor. Otherwise on the drivers side you will see right under the console seeing the shifter and the floor. The carpet will be too short. Then you will have to sew a piece of scrap carpet back in. A friend of mine did this before I could stop him. I ended up being the guy doing the sewing, because he was so psst. Do not mount the shifter on top of the carpet either.
