Which of these would be best to rebuild a th-400? the haynes manual covers 8 or so different transmissions and it's $25
the ATSG service/rebuild manual is $27.25

the price is pretty close, so thats not an issue. but which is better? Thanks!:)

Have you seen "How to work with and modify the Turbo Hydra-matic 400 Transmission"
By Ron Sessions?

No, that's a partial view. It's one of the best books. it tells you how to do things with normal tools instead of "transmission tool number so and so". It tells you how to fix weak points in certain years and upgrades and what to look for. Click on "Buy" and you can see a list of some places that sell it and the price. The big book shops like Borders can likely order it too.

I've used the ATSG manuals before, they're good, but not performance oriented like the Ron Sessions book shown. I have an old Motor transmission book for all domestic transmissions from the 60's thru the late 70's that I use mostly.

I've used a Haynes manual for rebuilding 350's and 400's. I just saw the Ron Sessions book on Ebay for $200. 4 different ones for about that price.

The ATSG manual is what professional use. It covers more interchange information and "catch me's" than any other manual. It's based on a OE service manual and in some cases IS the OEM service manual.

The Haynes book usually has some helpful illustrations to use in conjuction with an ATSG.

The Ron Sessions book does an excellent job of explaining everything from basic theory to step by step assembly, to performance mods. Some of the information is a bit dated but it's an excellent resource.

Looks like it's out of print for the original 1987 version. It also looks like they've updated the book and given it a new cover, but even that one is out of stock right now. I know of a couple places around here that might have them, I'll have to check now.

Thanks for all the replies guys. I'll see if I can find a copy of the ron sessions book, and perhaps the haynes manual as well if not for the pictures, then to be able to put it with the haynes manuals for the rest of my rides :)

Recommend the ATSG manuals, they are copies of factory service manuals. I have a bunch of them. The gold standard. Very good for current trans where you have numerous updates and versions.

Next would be the book, How to Rebuild Your TH400, as others have noted here. It should be in bookstores for $25 or so. Barnes and Noble, Booksamillion, carry it, and Summit has it. I have it, although I have never touched a TH400. Got it out of curiosity back in my C6 days.
