Hey guys, I just purchased a '72 chevelle and everytime I turn the steering wheel to the right, it starts a squealing noise... Is this the tie rods. bushings or what?

I currently have the same problem. My power steering box is going on my 72 nova. I dont know to much about your problem to give you a diagnose the problem completely but I would suggest checking it out...

It's not a "problem"....all cars back then for whatever reason...I am sure someone will chime in as to the technical/mechanical reason....did the "squeal" thing when turned all the way to the right or left for that matter. Cars nowadays don't have that issue.

It is the P/S belt slipping on the pump pulley as the pump maxes out pressure. Mine doesn't, build a stiffer mount and keep the pump as close to the balancer as possible. Short belts kept tight will eliminate that problem.

The squealing noise is telling you not to turn so far and hold it. It is the belt slipping due to turning it into the stops and creating high pressure, hence harder turning at the pump. when you hear the squealing - back off a bit to avoid over working the pump. the newer pumps and serpintine belt sustems are designed not to make the noise, but you can still damage the system if the wheel is held hard against the stops. If it squeals in normal turns, the belt needs to be replaced and/or tightened.

Isn't there a by-pass valve that's supposed to open? I had a terrible noise in my Camaro, and it went away when I changed the pump. I assume that there was something in the pump not working correctly. Rebuilt pumps are cheap, so it could be worth trying.
