Ok Rubadub, Von, Jon, John, Brad... You know who you are..

I'm very tired and have searched long enough for a pic of how these parts are attached to the car's grille and or header. It's the very small molding between the headlights and the small brackets ("1969 often missing" as their sold in the books). I know why there "often missing", I could not figure it out from the Assembly Manual and wanted to throw them out of my shop into the ditch.

Talk me thru it and any Pics would be helpful. :beers:

Heres this. http://www.1969supersport.com/frontend.html

But I can't talk you through it, this is how I bought it and I haven't got any farther on it.

Maybe somebody can look at these pictures and work with you on it, good luck.

Looking at your third pic on the very end of the header panel it looks like a sloted hole for the small trim piece to mount. A slotted hole like those for the header trim. Mine does not have them and may have ben covered up in the past or could be a 68 part you think?

I wouldn't have a clue Kent, sorry. But its pretty unlikely they would have mis matched parts, the guy that did a lot of the work on it went to body shop school and the guy that owned the car had plenty of money to fix it.

They are friends and not real young guys that would go for it, but you never know.

No I think that your car is correct and mine has the 68 header panel on it. Come to think of it my car only had the Chevelle emblem on the header and we had to drill for the "by chevrolet" emblem to go on.

My page 169 assem manual just shows the "moulding assembly" and the "nut", which goes on the inside. Doesn't the moulding have a "stud" formed in it?

From what I remember the short (approx 1" long) moldings between the headlight pairs each have a threaded stud for an attaching nut and also a small locating stud. There should be 2 holes in the header panel at each molding location, one for the attaching stud and a smaller one for the locating stud.

You guys are talking about the small trim that goes between the head lights?
My original header panel also did not have the trim on it when I bought my car and I am pretty sure it was never changed and was all original to the car. I did install the trim when I finished the car but I did not drill any holes I just glued them in place.:D

OK we all agree that I must have an aftermarket header or (one from a 68 most likely). When I look at pics of the 68's you can see no molding and no HOLES! Yes there is a 3/4" stud and a locating pin/stud on the moulding but what about those small L brackets I bought? How should they attach? The smaller side has a rectangle for a push-in plastic nut and the long side has a drilled hole for a screw or bolt. :D

Seems like this discussion of "some" 69's NOT having this trim has come up before several years ago. In fact, I seem to remember an obviously original unrestored 69 sitting on a trailer in the Best Western parking lot at CB?? that did not have the trim or the holes for the trim. I talked to someone about it, but can't remember who. It was gettin' kinda late and I was "sleepy". :D

Your moulding assem. with the 1/8'' stud and the alignment pin is pushed through the 1/8'' hole and the tiny "alignment" hole, then screw the nut on the stud and you are done. No square plastic thing found on mine. Where did you get your moulding? Any pics of the L brackets in question?

John I just drilled the holes and used touch-up paint and installed the trim a few moments ago. I did take pics of the bracket and will upload them tonight.

Picture 2 and 4 are left side, 3 is right side

Will have to do some more touch-up on that new scrach. I don't think this is how they go so I will see what you guy come up with.
I think they mount on the top of this tab on the header instead of the bottom as it is in this pic.

my original 69 SS hardtop still has its 40 year old paint and the header does not have that small trim piece either.

If the car had a 12 bolt with a white shift knob and AC, then it would have these moldings...........:D....oh and the green visors with mirror option.

JK

Some had them and some didn't.
I would think it would have been a Malibu thing.

My 69 Malibu had 'em. Photo taken way back then.

It apparently isn't a Malibu only item since the picture of the front of a 300 Deluxe 4 dr sedan in the '69 Chevelle dealer brochure shows the trim pieces in place.

I think it was like alot of other things we see, Supply Issues. Some of our cars got ripped off or shouldn't I say left off. ;)

i rearended some one in stop and go traffic 20+ years ago.i had to replace the bumper, valance, grill emblem and grill.the grill and valance i found in the want ads in the newspaper.
the grill had no holes for the center molding.so i drilled some but could never get the molding to fit right.since i could not get it to fit i filled the holes with filler and i painted the whole grill satin black.
only by being a member on this site 20 years later, did i find out that i had bought a deluxe 300 grill and not a SS grill.since i really like the look with all blacked out grill i am going to keep it that way.
now i have owned this car for 24 years of its 41 year life.so "yes" some things have been replaced on the front end by me.the other 17 years i know any thing could have happened or changed.but one thing i do know is the header and the rest of the car still sport the original 40 year old paint.

Unless someone replaced the header panel in those 17 years before you owned the car. I'd say it's likely.
