: easy electric fan setup for 66

I just wanted to share my fan setup for my 66. I have a 396 with a stock style radiator and water pump and pulleys. The fan is a 18" single summit fan, 2100cfm, and and bolts to the sides of the radiator. I was also able to cut some notches in the fan shroud and still use the shroud. The only I came up is, It would be hard to run a electric water pump because the pump motor and the fan motor would probably hit. I drove it today and it ran cool at about 180 like it always does. It was only 60 outside though. I will have to wait till summer and go out on a 110 so cal day and see how it does. With the mechanical fan it would run at 190 when it was 110 outside. I posted the link to the fan and some pictures of it on the car. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-320718/

Thanks for the write-up. Why did you switch to an electric fan? Were you having overheating issues?

I'm not positive, but it looks like you're running a small block radiator too. Mine is quite a bit bigger then that. That might help with your cooling issues also.

I bought the fan cause I was going to go all electric, but decided to stick with a mechanical water pump. So i put the fan in cause I was bored and wanted to see how it cooled. But i didn't have any cooling problems, like it said in the post it would run at 190 in traffic when it was 110 outside. The radiator is a stock replacement big block.

That's cool! Mine had a long water pump and some crappy flex fan on it. I just swapped all the pulleys and brackets and everything over to short water pump, so I could run a clutch fan and shroud. Mine was okay cruising around before, but in traffic in the 110 degree heat it would heat up big time. I'm hoping with the new set-up I won't have to worry about that, and I can run the A/C at the same time! :D

You can see a picture of my radiator in this pic. Maybe it isn't bigger than yours. I'm pretty sure it's a 4 core radiator.

yeah your radiator is thicker. mine isn't a four row, but it seems to do the trick.

can you guys measure your radiators for me i am trying to get a shroud for my 66 but my radiator seems to be small it measures 24" wide x 21" up and down. the shroud i bought from opgi was 28" wide.

where are you measuring from? does your radiator have fins on the side of it where it bolts to the support? the reason i ask is my radiator is only around 25" wide, but has the fins on the side where the shroud attaches, and where it bolts to the support. The hole in the core support is probably 24" wide.

no i dont see fins on the side i measured the width from side to side and up and down from were the tranny lines are. i will try to post a pic tommorrow

I apologize if i am hyjacking your post but this has been driving me nuts since the shroud i bought didnt fit. after looking at pics of 66 radiators i believe mine is not. i see yours and most of the other 66 radiators are right up against the support mine is off the support about 3 inches. see pics.

it looks like it might be the right size, but doesn't have the outer fin for the shroud to hook to. the shroud hooks to the outer part of the radiator, which you don't have

That looks like the 64/65 radiator set up. I know they had that big spacer from the core support to the radiator. And my radiator pretty much fills up the entire core support opening, and yours doesn't look like it does that.

Just like Kalvin's set-up and mine, there is an outer flange that the shroud bolts to.

I kept the flex fan on my small block with long water pump. I did remove the spacer between the rad and the rad support and installed a pusher electric fan on the front side. I wanted it for drag racing so I could run the fan in the pits. everything fit nicely but i am still working on a shroud. I think I am going to be using a universal chrome shroud from summit.

I was thinking the same thing with the universal shroud but how does it work with the top hose? wouldnt the hose be in the way?

Here's how my original rad looked after I put a shroud on it and before I had the rad restored.

dave, what does that measure across from bolt to bolt on the shroud? i am now looking at radiators on ebay they are not as expensive as i thought.

Frankiblu,

I have a '66 Malibu with a 283 that I just put a shroud on. I bought an aftermarket one a while back and it didn't even come close to fitting. Here's what I did. I removed my spacer from the front of my radiator, went to the junk yard and removed a fan shroud from a 1st generation S-10 or Blazer (this is a two piece shroud) did a little trimming on it, fabbed some brackets for the side and she works like a charm. Do not forget to buy longer rad hoses before you start this job.

The 2 piece shroud is nice, because it holds together with 2 bolts on each side....so, if you have to work up front, you just remove 4 bolts for the shroud. I'm installing A/C on my car in the next few weeks so I really needed the shroud.

sounds good i may try it. did your radiator have the brackets on it for a original shroud cause mine do's not. did you see my pics?

I thought small blocks used the spacer in front of the rad but big blocks didn't...

I will soon be putting my motor back in the car and now have the universal shroud. I think there will be enough room to get the shroud in under the top hose. That is atleast my hope. If not, I will be back to the drawing board as well. If I get it set up, i will post some pics.
