Good morning everyone,

I have some questions about the stainless brake lines we can buy for our cars.

I recently bought a kit from GU that included all the lines for my 70 SS. When I went to install them, I thought I tightened them enough but for some reason just about every connection leaked.
I went back and retightened them, but stripped a few of the connections because I had to tighten them so much. I did use the correct Craftsman line wenches that I bought specifically for doing this.

I assume the reason this happened is because the stainless is such a hard material it wouldn't seat properly where the softer mild steel seats a little easier.

I'm getting ready to do it again with a new set of lines since I had to take some of the other ones off and messed them up even more in that process. If anyone has any install tips or could let me know what I am doing wrong I would greatly appreciate it!!

You're right about the stainless being harder, as it is. I've been told to seat the lines; tighten them up, loosen them up, then retighten. Do this several times at each connection, and this should seat them. The problems mainly occur because a lot of us ( myself included )are using the stainless lines with a used/rebuilt master cylinder or proportioning valve. Usually when using ALL brand new parts, there aren't any problems.

Great, this just scared the living crap out of me as I just got all new stainless brake lines and fuel lines for my 70 Elky SS 396. Hopefully I will have no leaks.
