bob70,
I don't remember if a 66 is same as a 64,I just put one in couple of weeks ago. There is a little pin(small button) on the switch assembly that must be pushed in to allow the shaft to slide out the front.Once the shaft is out its a breeze,Just unscrew the retaining washer and remove assembly from under dash. You can see the button on the new switch easily( have to feel for it while in dash)
I replaced mine cause the tail lights were on then off at will.It turned out to be a loose connection at the place where harness plugs into flat cable that runs under carpet.

How do you get that retaining nut off? does it require a special tool? I'm assuming it's the one with the two small holes in it.
Thanks

You need some kind of spanner wrench, but I have found that some small snap-ring pliars works well. Just spin it off CCW like any other nut.
