: After 38 Years LS6 Motor Runs Again

We finally started this LS6 motor after sitting in hibernation for the better part of 38 years. Steve did a great job on the rebuild, it fired right up and the cam break in went smoothly and we're not seeing any leaks, so it looks like it's good to go. We were able to keep the original blue marking on the flywheel as well.

Thats a pretty neat set-up Mike. I like the idea of firing the engine before it's back in the car. Now when it goes back in the engine comp, it's ready to go. How does the cooling work? I see a garden hose going in. Where does the water come out? Does it keep circulating fresh water, or is there a radiator I'm not seeing. I see the fuel set-up. Thats simple enough. Also what did you do as far as getting 12 volts to the coil/dist/starter? Is it home made, or is it purchased somewhere?

Bill, there is another hose that drains, so it just runs fresh water through while it's on the stand running. There is also a battery that goes on the bottom but we must have removed it before I took the pictures. Steve runs quite a few motors on it.

What Bill asked plus,

Does the stand want to move around?

Did you do the cam run in on the stand?

How does the stand handle the torque of the engine? Is it held down some how?

Yeah, the stand moved around a little just from the torque movement. And yes, we did the cam break in on that stand, then ran it twice after that. The stand itself isn't strapped down and the weight of the motor held it in place. We ran it fairly hard too, the second and third time. I'd say we ran it harder on the stand than it will ever run again. If I were going to have any problems, I would want to know now.

A lot of parts are coming back from the resto guys, booster, carb, etc. The trans. and rear are done, the frame doesn't need much more to finish other than time and the body is going into the shop for sheet metal work Friday. It's getting there, slower than I had hoped but I'm grinding it out!!!

Just fired my motor on a stand last week at an engine shop. Did the timing, dwell, & hot valve setting. It was awesome! I hate doing that stuff in the car.

Keep on digging, you may have it ready for CB10.

I don't know Joe, I still have quite a ways to go and I don't want to rush it.
