: Help Identifying a 67 Chevelle SS
Bward Mar 2nd, 10, 11:29 PM Hello, have what we hope to be a 1967 Chevelle SS 396, 375 horse matching numbers car. has AC. Automatic.
The picture attached is the tag from the firewall. The VIN of the car is 138177A157638. There is a tag on the A pillar on the drivers side that does match the VIN on the title. The only number I see that is cast on the engine is on the back driver’s side near the bell housing well below the head. That number is 961. There is a flat spot on the passenger side front of the motor that normally has numbers, there is no number stamped there. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated. This gentleman bought this car a few years ago as a matching numbers car full frame off restoration and now he has passed. I would be very willing to talk to anyone while I was looking at the car so you could help me.
This is a very beautiful car also has Rear Axle Drag Kit
Thank you very much.
Brian
Pete 67 Mar 2nd, 10, 11:32 PM For Sale ads are taboo, but that car is a 1967 Chevelle. Vin reads like an SS.
961 would not be the correct 396 block for 1967.

Bward Mar 2nd, 10, 11:34 PM That's what I am afraid of. If this is not a matching numbers car I need to know why so I can tell the wife.
Thanks,
Brian
Bward Mar 2nd, 10, 11:35 PM Sorry it is a 67

jeffschevelle Mar 2nd, 10, 11:38 PM 961 block is a 66 casting, not used on 67's. Also, you could not get a 396/375 HP in 1967 with an automatic trans, or with AC. So if the AC and/or the AT are factory, then it was not a factory born 375 HP car.

Jeff is correct. Your best hope is that it's a 350HP combo. This car was built in Atlanta, there's a good chance a hidden VIN is stamped on the upper edge of the firewall underneath the cowl. You can remove the wipers and cowl to view the hidden VIN. It should match the VIN on the 'A' pillar. There's also a hidden VIN directly beneath the blower motor cutout on the engine side of the firewall. Got any photos of the engine compartment? L78 motor used a deep groove cast iron crank pulley.

I see a major problem with the VIN of the car not matching the VIN on the title.
VIN seems to be OK in regards to build date, so that is good.
And as others have said, engine is not even correct year. Since the block was decked, no way to tell what it was from the factory. Does the engine have a factory aluminum intake and rectangle port heads? Is it a 4 bolt main block?

The VIN on the title is not supposed to match the numbers on the body tag pictured.

Sadly the gentleman that purchased the car as a matching numbers car was cheated.
The letter "M" in group 2 on the tag identifies it as a Powerglide car so it doesn't have the more desireable TH400. What is a "Rear Axle Drag Kit?"
bcmiller Mar 3rd, 10, 11:00 AM The VIN on the title is not supposed to match the numbers on the body tag pictured.
Right Dean. I know that. Not my first rodeo. I guess I read it wrong or too fast? My bad. I got all worked up for nothing. Sorry.
Freddy Mercado Mar 3rd, 10, 7:38 PM I agree with all her. No 375 hp 396 had AC.
Bward Mar 3rd, 10, 10:46 PM A Rear Axle Drag Kit looks to be a round bar that goes from the rear end upper control arms heading to about the middle of the car and goes to the other side of the car. Like a very large sway bar almost. Here is somewhat of a picture of it. I have a friend that is going to put all the pictures I have right now on a site and I will send a link to it. I will take off the cowl and check for those vins. The guy has numerous motors laying around. What are the numbers that should be on the original 67 ss block?
Thanks everyone.

Right Dean. I know that. Not my first rodeo. I guess I read it wrong or too fast? My bad. I got all worked up for nothing. Sorry.
Sorry Bryon, I wanted to let the original poster and future readers to be aware.
Didn't mean to sound like I thought "it was YOUR first rodeo".
Bward Mar 8th, 10, 12:12 PM We are selling the car and I want to make sure that it is a True all matching SS. it looks like it is not.

DaleM Mar 8th, 10, 12:25 PM Not very close to numbers matching, IMO, and not very close to even being correct. Wrong paint color, wrong intake/carb, wrong transmission (trim tag shows Powerglide), A/C gone, and quite a few other details wrong. I didn't see any numbers for the engine which would be the biggest thing in a 'matching numbers' car. Looks like a nice driver quality car though.
Bward Mar 8th, 10, 12:41 PM The only numbers I got from the engine are 961. There are no other numbers anywhere, were I can see.
DaleM Mar 8th, 10, 2:16 PM Nothing stamped on the engine pad in front of the passenger side head? By '961' do you mean 3855961? That's a 66 block.
Bward Mar 8th, 10, 10:18 PM Dale, First, Thank you very much for all your help. On the block in front of the driver 9 Back of motor)the number looks like 3855961
Also on the passenger side front of the engine there is a flat spot where numbers usually are that pad has 780 that is it.
