: Legendary trim parts carpet quandry 4 speed console vs non console
re-animated Mar 1st, 10, 11:54 PM hi guys; i just got my carpet from legendary. it is the trim parts brand. when i ordered it over the phone,i told the sales person that i had a 4 speed. he then asked me if i had a console to which i confirmed that i did.
i pulled the carpet out of the box today and the little tag attached to the carpet said 68-72 chevelle 4 speed / no console. i looked at the underside at the jute and a square was cut out in the shape for a bench seat hump. i called legendary and spoke to a woman named nancy. i told her what was i the box. she even confirmed that the invoice said 4 speed with console when i ordered it. she said she would check into it for me.
she called back sometime later and told me that the "tech department" said the carpet is the same for all 4 speeds, whether they be console or non console applications. i just wanted to know if anyone has been able to verify if this is true or not or if i was given a line of bull so they could take themselves off of the hook.
i seem to remember the cut out in the jute in my other chevelle having the rectangular cut out that would have been correct for a console. this excuse doesnt sound right to me. if both appilcations were the same, then why ask whether or not one has a console in their car?
thanks, dave
RAMBO Mar 2nd, 10, 12:01 AM If they were different i would think that the "NO CONSOLE" carpet would be a better fitting one- as the console would hide any problems if the other didn't fit well.
I had a good experience with the 66 Trim Parts 4spd carpet set last year from ledgendary. Fit my car (without console) great... But thats just my experience iwth this one years carpet fit.
Good luck
Ben
re-animated Mar 2nd, 10, 10:37 AM hi ben; thanks for the reply, but both a console 4 speed and bench seat 4 speed car have the hump spotwelded in the floor. by non-console i don't mean an automatic on the column in which there wouldnt be a hump welded into the floor.anyone else have a similar experience that they could speak on this?
thanks, dave
Bill Rose Mar 2nd, 10, 10:58 AM hi ben; thanks for the reply, but both a console 4 speed and bench seat 4 speed car have the hump spotwelded in the floor. by non-console i don't mean an automatic on the column in which there wouldnt be a hump welded into the floor.anyone else have a similar experience that they could speak on this?thanks, dave
Thats incorrect Dave:
There are two different humps for 4 speed-console and non console. They make the carpet for the non console 4 speed, and it's way too big in that area to fit correctly, unless you cut it all up, and try to stuff the extra, under the console.
You'would be better of getting a carpet with no hump (automatic on the floor)
At least you wouldn't have so much extra material. I'd send it back, and be sure they pay for it. You didn't get what you ordered, because they don't make the console/4 speed carpet:clonk:
They get the carpet from Trim Parts, and they just lie to you, and say it's the correct carpet. I know from experience, trust me, that carpet will be a pain to install unless you use every 4 letter word you know.
......and the ACC carpet is just as bad, or worse.
I hear a lot of good things about Legendary, but if they're selling those Trim Parts carpets, somebody had to take a class on how to deal with irate customers.
RAMBO Mar 2nd, 10, 12:31 PM Again my experience was for a 66- but mine was a Non-Console 4spd Carpet Set- as that is what my car is(sort of) No console 3spd on the floor.
Carpet fit GREAT over the hump- nice and tight and the square cutout landed exactly on the factory shifter hump.
I can't speak for the 68+ but i know Bill has tried several w/o good fits, so his experince is probably what you'll find as well.
Indyspecracer Mar 2nd, 10, 10:01 PM I laid my Trim Parts Carpet out in my car this past weekend. The car is a 4spd console car. The area over the console seemed fine as did everywhere except the area over the transmission hump close to the fire wall. There is too much material in this area. The rear piece of carpet fits pretty well overall. I may have more insight after this coming weekend when I attempt a final fit.

hi bill; i'm aware that there are two different humps for console and bench seat 4 speeds. i guess i should have explained better that i knew of this, but i thought it was apparent from the way i asked the question that i did know.

re-animated Mar 2nd, 10, 11:30 PM i laid the carpet out in the car today. the fit actually wasnt bad. it was a little loose around the shifter hole and up by the firewall, but i think after i cut out the hole for the shifter and fold it in a bit,it will fit pretty decent. i did this in my other 70 chevelle and the carpet fit good after a little trimming and a few 4 letter words.
i would be interested in trying the carpet for an automatic car,but i wonder if the carpet would come up short in the rocker area because of the console hump. has anyone tried it that way and had enough carpet left in the rocker areas to screw under the sill plates without being short?
dave

Sorry Dave, My mistake. I reread it, and you were just saying that they were both welded in, not that they were both the same. Sorry about that.:beers:

hi bill; no problem. beers to you too. :beers: i have been through this before as well and i wasnt 100% happy with all the trimming and fitting i had to do.
do you think that if i tried the automatic carpet, that there would be enough material left to tuck under the sill plates? it's already at the outer edge of the rocker with the 4 speed carpet.
dave
Bill Rose Mar 2nd, 10, 11:54 PM I would think it would be plenty big enough by the rockers. I had to cut off several inches by the sill plates.....but I'd lay it inside the car before you cut anything.
L72Chevelle Mar 3rd, 10, 6:00 PM Looking at my 2009 Trimparts catalog they list #53164 as 68-72 factory 4-speed no console and #53131 as fits all others. Going by this it seems that the auto and 4-speed with console is the same carpet. Hope this helps some, Phil.

hi phil; thanks very much and nice going. i happen to have the 2009 trim parts catalog as well and that's what it says in there. a non-console carpet is different than a console carpet and they have different part numbers to prove it. if you have the catalog, check out page 134 for chevelle. part number 53164 for a 4 speed/non console and 53131 for all other applications.
obviously the people over at legendary interiors like other parts houses, don't mind "omitting the truth" with their customers in order to wash their hands of their screw-ups. the person i dealt with didnt assume they were the same when i first raised the question,so i don't think it was an honest mistake. she said she needed to do a little research and get back to me. she called back an hour or so later and told me that the tech department said they are all the same. maybe they need to do some early spring cleaning in their tech department.
i will be on the phone thursday morning to inform legendary with this black and white evidence. let's see them worm their way out of this one. i hope this thread helps prevent anyone else from letting these reproduction companies mislead them with incorrect information in regards to trim parts carpeting. if enough people stop settling for incorrect or improper fitting parts and continue sending them back so the companies start losing some serious money, maybe they'll start listening to us and fix the problems and one day we can be happy with the products we receive and install in our cars.
o.k.,i'm stepping down from the soapbox now.
regards, dave
dave russell Mar 23rd, 10, 12:34 AM OK- now it's my turn. Today I ordered a new carpet for my 64 convt. I'm on Vancouver Island In BC so I don't have a lot of places I can order from locally. The ONE place I called that would actually get one for me did not know the difference if any between OPGI & PUI
etc. so it will be interesting to see what I end up with & if it will be any good. From what I read here it's a crap-shoot as to quality, no matter who you deal with. Seems to me this is a bogus situation. All the ads stress quality blah blah but I have yet to see any rave reviews of any carpet in particular.
