: Wheels on police cars

I wonder what kind of tire size /brand that is used in American police cars. I see many are F@@@ Crown Victoria that is probably the one used most.
They look like steel but if I where going to bet itīs probably aluminum wheels with a police cap, either 16 " or 17"?

The reason I ask is that I assume that these tires have good grip and handling characteristics. I'm going to upgrade my suspension and want a classic look but with a good handling and would believe that the police have good tire and wheel on their cars. Not going to run police rims only the tires, with rally wheels.

Good or bad idea ?

When I serviced our town police cars, they used a 225/70-15 BFG Comp T/A. I am not sure what they are using now.

Most cop cars that are late model Crown Vic Police Interceptors run 17" Steel wheels...at least around here.

I found this: (https://www.fleet.ford.com/showroom/2009fleetshowroom/2009-CrVicPoliceInt.asp)

235/55/17

Here's a set for sale...

There are a few companies that sell 17" rallies.

This thread reminds me of blues brothers.

It's got a cop motor, a 440 cubic inch plant, it's got cop tires, cop suspensions, cop shocks. It's a model made before catalytic converters so it'll run good on regular gas. What do you say, is it the new Bluesmobile or what?

I have had two 1996 Caprice cop cars that were fitted with Firestones.
The tires were Firehawk PV47 225/70R15 100V
These tires have directional mounting info on the sidewalls.

Goodyear Eagles is what we have used for years. And yes the rims are steel. They take a lot more abuse than the aluminums and can be touched up with a black rattle can to make them look now ;)

bad idea...
I am not an expert but I bet 90% of cop cars handle crappy! Maybe better than a standar crown vic but still crappy. I would put money on it that my Cobalt SS would handle way better than any crown vic. (Nuremburing 8:22 :)) The B4C Camaros handle pretty well also.

Cop car usualy have a touring, all season tire. Look into a summer performance tire for better grip and handling.
Also try to run a wider wheels with a narrower tire... the sidewall will flex less= better handling. For example a 275 40 17 will fless less on a 10" rim vs a 9" rim.
But looks also come into play and most people want the widest tires they can fit.

That is correct, tire is a P235/55R-17 BSW (Goodyear I do believe) and the wheel is a 17" steel wheel.
If it ever stops raining,I'll go out and snap a quick pic.

These cars actually handle quite well, very flat with almost zero body roll.

Tires on the Caprice 9c1s are the Goodyear Eagle RS. Darn good tires and cost a pretty penny too.

...just snapped these...this is the basic wheel option w/o the full-size covers, none of my muni accounts order those...tires are Goodyear Eagle RS-A's.

Notice the weighs are no longer made from lead...
