I have never painted anything on a car. Hell, I haven't even painted a wall in a house for at least 15 years. I have no idea where to start.

The next bit of work on my El Camino is to re-install the inner fender wells the previous owner removed. I have them, and they are dirty with a bit of surface rust. While I have them out, I'd like to clean them up and either leave them with a coat of primer or some flat black paint. Plus, if I screw the paint job up royally it won't be that noticeable. I do not have a compressor, so I guess I will be spraying with a rattle can.

What I'm looking for is a good primer (no pun intended) on how to paint a part from start to finish, including the equipment and supplies that are recommended. Does anyone know of a post here or somewhere else that goes through the steps? A book or magazine article that might cover it? The more details the better.

Thanks.
