: Wrong master cylinder
KELLERZ67 Feb 28th, 10, 10:43 PM Bought a Bm679 Master cylinder from Year One a year ago, just about got the car together [67 SS ] ,and I can't get the Lines to screw into the master cylinder I also had to cut the brake pedal push rod approx 1/2" to make it fit . The car has manual Drums which is what the catalog says this is, it's not,I think its more for a disc drum set up. I guess the question is where can I get another rod.
Jack Action Mar 1st, 10, 9:13 AM I'm currently in a "trying to find a master" nightmare. I also have drum brakes all around (power) with my '69 El Camino.
I'm surprised your line don't fit. Do you have the original fittings?
As for cutting the brake pedal pushrod, according to Year One:
This unit also has a removable insert in the rear pilot hole to allow installation on cars that require a shallow or deep pilot hole.
For your system, you have to remove that insert. You need a deep pilot hole for manual set-up.
For a new pushrod, I found this one (http://www.resto-modtechnology.com/servlet/the-206/MANUAL-BRAKE-PUSH-ROD/Detail). :hurray:
If the catalog said that it was for a drum/drum set-up (manual or power), it is probably because it has a 1" bore (disc brake have 1-1/8"). Although it should still work for you, it is not the correct model.
Here is my question. In all drum/drum master cylinders, there's supposed to be a rubber check valve in each outlet port (it is a 10 psi residual pressure valve to hold pressure in the wheel cylinders). I have checked many new m/c for it, none of them have those. You can check it with a little wire, it will feel a little "rubbery" on the edges of the port (in the center you might go through the hole - the flat part - that let the fluid out). Do you have them on yours?
If not, could you tell me if you have a large brass fitting (out. dia. of cone: 0.430") in the ports or a small brass fitting (out. dia. of cone: 0.293"). Because I have a m/c rebuilt kit to install them myself, but you need ports for those large brass fittings, which none of the new m/c I've seen have (even though they're supposed to be for my application)
Here is a picture of the small and large brass fittings and the check valve that goes behind it:

Thank you.

Here is a pic of mine.I will check it tomorrow,I did not catch the part about removing the insert till it was too late
Jack Action Mar 2nd, 10, 9:25 AM Here is a pic of mine.
Really?! :noway: This master has nothing to do with the one pictured with the Year One BM679.
If I'm not mistaking, this is the one you have (https://www.dormanproducts.com/cgi-bin/vm91corp30r/item-dtl.w?sid=AkUdTieqafdaNabl013744145793393050&item=M39324&icrid=&clt=hwrap1&vsrch_str=m39324&vsrch_brand=ALL&vsrch_cat=ALL&st_amount=&end_amount=&start=&vfrom=&prev=&vnext=&category_list=:0:0:0). (the only difference is that you have bleeders)
And this is the list of vehicles (https://www.dormanproducts.com/cgi-bin/vm91corp30r/buyers_guide.w?sid=AkUdTieqafdaNabl013744145793393 050&item=M39324&clt=hwrap1&vsrch_str=m39324&vsrch_brand=ALL&vsrch_cat=ALL&st_amount=&end_amount=&start=&vfrom=&prev=&vnext=&category_list=:0:0) on which it was used (all pick-ups from the 80's). So the fact that the fittings don't fit is not a mystery anymore. One thing for sure, it's a 1-1/8" bore (measure it) and it is for a disc/drum set-up (larger reservoir for front discs)
Damn, I hate when they don't send the part that is in the picture.
KELLERZ67 Mar 2nd, 10, 9:37 PM so what do ya think, buy the shaft and a new mc or try to buy the correct
bm679 and use the shortened shaft
Jack Action Mar 3rd, 10, 9:26 AM Buy the shaft and a new m/c. Just make sure it is a 1" bore, deep pilot hole (shallow pilot hole can only be used with vacuum booster).
As for the look, there are basically 4 models that would do the job (I can't guarantee that ordering these part numbers will get you the one pictured):
Delco-moraine power brake style (https://www.dormanproducts.com/cgi-bin/vm91corp30r/item-dtl.w?sid=pctkfeEViXjldkai013764466285661713&item=M64986&icrid=0x00a05d2e&clt=hwrap1&vsrch_str=&vsrch_brand=&vsrch_cat=&st_amount=&end_amount=&start=&vfrom=&prev=&vnext=&category_list=:0) (the one listed as correct replacement for manual brakes)
Bendix power brake style (https://www.dormanproducts.com/cgi-bin/vm91corp30r/item-dtl.w?sid=pctkfeEViXjldkai013764466285661713&item=M64885&icrid=&clt=hwrap1&vsrch_str=m64885&vsrch_brand=ALL&vsrch_cat=ALL&st_amount=&end_amount=&start=&vfrom=&prev=&vnext=&category_list=:0)
Corvette style (heavy duty application) (https://www.dormanproducts.com/cgi-bin/vm91corp30r/item-dtl.w?sid=pctkfeEViXjldkai013764466285661713&item=M36367&icrid=&clt=hwrap1&vsrch_str=m36367&vsrch_brand=ALL&vsrch_cat=ALL&st_amount=&end_amount=&start=&vfrom=&prev=&vnext=&category_list=:0)
non-stock look (http://www.summitracing.com/parts/DHB-M64986/?rtype=10) (yes, I know, this is the same part number as the Delco-moraine model)
KELLERZ67 Mar 4th, 10, 9:17 PM Grerat I appreciate your help this is my first car so everything takes me awhile b4 i figure it out,I bought that MC a year ago and am just getting to that part, you dont know by chance if the rod out of a 69vchevelle would work , thanks again:)
Jack Action Mar 4th, 10, 10:53 PM you dont know by chance if the rod out of a 69vchevelle would work
I wouldn't know for sure, but it should. The pushrod that I found for you previously is universal for all vehicles, all years. I would guess it is mainly adjusting it to the correct length when you install it.
Turbos10 Apr 28th, 10, 3:13 PM I just got a 64 and my car looks to have this setup, but it is extremely hard pedal pressure. It has brakes, but it feels like a power assist cylinder or something. They are slow to react and dont get alot of braking. The PO seemed to think there were a couple wheel cylinders with issues, but it does not feel that way to me. Does someone have part number that can be checked to varify what I have.
Sorry to hijack, and thanks for any help.

A part number won't help you, as these m/c are mostly "copies" of the original version and the inside can be anything. I don't even think most of them have a p/n on them.
For a hard pedal, two problems that I can identify: for 4-wheel drum brakes, you have a m/c with a 1-1/8" bore instead of a 1" bore (but, that's what I have and I personally like the slightly stiffer pedal) or the pushrod is in the wrong hole of the brake pedal. For manual brakes, the pushrod goes into the upper hole, the lower being used with power brakes. But, although these gives you a harder pedal, it would also give you a faster reaction.
Turbos10 Apr 29th, 10, 11:07 PM Thanks for the input. I will check the pedal position. It is all drum and the pedal has basically no travel at all....so the position makes sense. Thanks!
