: SS Dash in a Malibu
I'll Drive it One Day Feb 28th, 10, 7:55 AM I have been working on this car for quite a while now and finally got it pretty much done with the exception of the interior. I was just going to clean up my sweep style dash but decided to either make an insert for some autometer guages or buy the SS dash and change out the whole thing. My only question I guess would be does the SS dash you by from our sponsors directy fit back in place or is there a diffrence between the two? Specificly if the metal bracket holding it to the firewall and the AC controls and ducting. The car is a 72 and any help would be appreciated.
Hi-po SS 454 Feb 28th, 10, 9:42 AM The after market SS dash for your year car is suppose to drop right in place using the same mounting points as stock. From what I have heard from some is the fit is decent but not 100% perfect . But the few I have seen looked dam decent.
black 71 Feb 28th, 10, 10:55 AM Swapped mine out not too bad of a fit,, had to do some re-wiring also but not bad, one thing for sure take your time! & don't force anything, pics. help also.

There is some wiring that has to be added: the ammeter and tach wires won't be in your harness. They should come with the SS dash harness.
Easiest way to do the swap, is to take the harness out of the car, attached to the dash. Undo the bulkhead plugs under the hood; IIRC there's a ¼" screw that holds the underhood side to the dash side. Unclip the fusebox from the bulkhead plug, it's just 2 plastic barbs that are part of the one, that hold it to the other. Take out the 2 screws, 5/16" I think, that hold the bulkhead plug to the firewall. Remove the plastic trim under the steering column, remove the 2 nuts holding the column up, let the column drop a few inches. Remove the dash bezel, and the nuts that hold the cluster in. Pull the dash out enough to get your hand in behind there and unclip the speedo cable. Disconnect the plugs that connect the main dash harness to the various sub-harnesses and parts that stay with the rest of the car; the steering column, ign sw, HVAC, Fisher Body plug, radio, maybe 1 or 2 others. Pull out a couple of push-in style harness retainers tied into the harness that hold it to the cowl. Then the ENTIRE dash harness will just come right out with the dash. Makes it super easy to add the necessary wires. Doesn't take 15 minutes from drive-in to the dash laying on the ground, with all wiring intact and attached.
I'll Drive it One Day Feb 28th, 10, 11:50 AM Excellent, thanks for the replys! I already have the malibu dash out and this is what made me lean towards a new SS dash being that the old dash is old and really brittle. I already have a fairly good sized crack next to the glove box and I just think I would be better off with a new one. Being that I don't have an SS guage cluster, I have thought about putting autometer guages. I have read a couple of post in here that people have replaced their guages w/ autometer gauges but left them in the original locations on the SS dash. Any suggestions?
70 ELK Feb 28th, 10, 1:28 PM Thanks for starting this thread and for the helpful responses. I have no experience in this whatsoever, but am planning to replace my sweep dash with an SS dash this summer. Rather than be true to the original SS setup, however, and therefore not have an oil pressure gauge, I plan to substitute a Classic Instruments Quad gauge--containing fuel, temp, oil pressure and alternator--in place of the SS's clock, and then fill out the three smaller slots--originally used for fuel, temp and generator--with a small clock, vacuum, and perhaps, if it is possible, redundant idiot lights or, alternatively, oil temp.
I think that Classic Instruments is the only company to make the Quad gauge in the original-looking style I want. Dakota Digital makes a nice set-up, but I still prefer analog to digital for my 40 year old Camino.
Would appreciate anyone's thoughts if my thinking is crazy or won't work.
