: 65 Chevelle Upholstery Options
lail1985 Feb 26th, 10, 2:03 PM Fellow enthusiasts, we are in the developmental stages of our 64 & 65 Chevelle upholstery. We are currently working on 65 with 64 following soon after. We need your help. In researching the available upholstery colors for the 65 year, our original 1965 dealer albums and Detroit books show a different insert grain than what is currently offered by other companies. I am attaching photos for all of you to view. Our books also list only solid color interiors and no 2-tone options although the original upholstery we have here is in fact 2-tone with a different insert material than what is shown in our photos. After looking at many cars on the web, we have seen many 2-tone interiors for all colors excluding black and white. Do any of the 65 owners on this forum have an interior that matches the pictures we have attached??? If you do please let us know so we can offer this style interior as well. Thanks in advance.

Front and rear bench on a Malibu convert
Rich-L79 Feb 26th, 10, 3:54 PM The ribbed vinyl in the sample books was never actually used except in some El Camino interiors. If you read the fine print in the book itself or in the addendums in the pages at the front of the larger dealer book you'll find statements to that affect.
Two tone vinyl interiors were the norm in cars that came with all vinyl interiors (wagons, El Caminos, Super Sports, convertibles, optional bucket seats) that weren't all black or black/white.
Here are some photos of various bucket seat interiors: http://chevellestuff.com/1965/chevelle/interiors/interior_bucket.htm
Most non-SS, non-wagon, non-convertible, non-El Camino interiors were a combination of cloth and vinyl. Only certain models or certain options got all-vinyl seats.
lail1985 Feb 26th, 10, 4:17 PM Rich - Thanks for the info. Our dealer album has no addendum page but I was able to locate it in another resource book. As stated under revisions,
"Malibu SS interior fabric swatches include a corduroy pattern vinyl which has been replaced by a vinyl with a texture similar to the small portion of each sample swatch. This new vinyl will have a darker tone on all interiors except white and black. Order codes do not change. Interior fabric swatches are also incorrect for Malibu Convertible and Custom El Camino models-as above, the corduroy pattern vinyl has been replaced by a textured vinyl similar to the small portion of each swatch, but of a darker tone. Swatches shown are correct for Malibu Station Wagon. Order codes still apply for all models."
Thanks again!

Whoops! I said El Camino but it was wagons instead. Anyway, glad that was cleared up to prevent you from making up a vinyl that was hardly ever used! Actually, that ribbed vinyl would have actually looked pretty good, too bad they didn't use it in the end.
yellow69rsz Feb 26th, 10, 5:22 PM I have a plain jane 6 cyl 65 vert with red vinyl, originally was 2 toned red from the factory FYI.
jeffschevelle Feb 27th, 10, 12:51 AM Eric - Do you plan to produce the correct divider welt (I think that is what it is called - the piece that looks like vinyl wrapped around a wire or rod) that goes on the sides of the inserts?
The original covers used two versions of the welt. One is the typical vinyl wrapped around a plastic rod, which was used on the outer perimiter of the seats. But the welt on either side of the inserts is a solid molded plastic piece (molded in the color of the non-insert part of the seat), and it is visibly smaller than the vinyl wrapped welt on the outer perimeter of the seats. Let me know if this verbal explanation does not make sense and I will try to get you some pics showing the difference.
That is one immediate give-away on all the currently available 65 repro covers, when the welt is "fat" on the sides of the inserts the same as it is around the outer edges of the seats.
Thanks - Jeff
