Just want to ask this Q before anything blows up on me. I have a costumers car in the shop that was painted in lacquer, it has strips on the hood that are basicly pink and he wants to paint them a different color . I was planing to sand the top clear (lacquer) flat, and fine line just outside the strips . Then , paint with a different color ( lacquer) , then clear (lacquer) over everything. Is there protocol? Anything I should look out for? Painted plenty of cars bc/cc and complete lacquer jobs but alittle nervous shooting over old lacquer. thanks ahead of time, Darryl

I would think you would be ok if you start out with light coats first to kind of seal it off so to speak and give plenty of flash time in between coats. Is the old laquer cracked at all?

You should be fine. As tristatechevelle suggest use light coats. Don't use to hot of a thinner. Something fast evaporating will give you a better chance of not having any issues.

thanks guys ! no cracks in the old lacquer , I think its because the car hasnt seen the light of day since its been painted in the late 80s.

Except for the fact that it needs to be color sanded and buffed, lacquer is super easy to work with and very forgiving. Just sand it out wet with 400 grit paper and lay on the new color. A medium fast thinner should be fine this time of year unless your shop is on the cool side, then you might consider something hotter so it tacks up sooner.
