I have a '64 Malibu with a 454 4 spd., I have installed new springs 3 times over the past 18 years. Each time the car sits way too high, about 1 1/2" to 2" higher than stock. Stock shocks are topped out with the car sitting at rest. The springs I put in last year were purchased from Durham Spring shop: rear '64 chevelle 327 springs and front '66 chevelle 396 springs. The car sits level but too high. Has anyone else had this problem? Is there some one that makes the right springs for my car? I have tried Moog, their part numbers say that I had the right springs but the car sat too high. Dave

Are you torquing all the A-arm bushings while the front end is still off the ground? If you are, that's the problem.
If not, what springs are you using? What's their intended application? Have you given them a few weeks or so to settle?

I can't speak for the big block springs, but i have the hotchkis 1" drop springs for small block in my car- It sits just right, not too high, not too low.
I had stock springs that had been cut and it sat way too low and would bottom out a lot- I was afraid to go with stock springs because of what you are describing... so i went with the 1" drops and it sits great- just above the tire, but not so high there is a gap.
You can see pics in my sig.
Clint :control arm bushings were tighten up with the full weight of the car on the ground. I used the springs mentioned above '64 327 rear springs & '66 396 front springs. The springs were installed almost a year ago and there is over 1000 miles on the car since then. The car did drop some since the springs were installed , but still sits way too high. I have cut springs twice in the past only to find out that you tend to get a rough ride and then the front springs get week and sag with in about 2 or 3 years time. I'm quite fed up with changing & cutting springs. I may try a set of lowering springs as mentioned by Ben. But I wish I could just get the correct stock height springs for my car. Dave
Ben nice cars you have there! I also own a '68 elCamino SS and a '67 Camaro. Dave

DSR-
I have cut my springs however i also have 2" drop spindles. but i did not like they the car sat and lowering springs prohibited steering in corners. i cut a 1/3 loop off heavy duty moog springs and it lowered car about 1/2 - 3/4", but i also wanted to increase spring rate a little. i have heard but do not know for sure that what exactly the math is i believe 1 full loop is 2 " drop but i dont know what it will do to your ride. i do know it will stiffin up and increase spring rate. i dont think you want to cut more than 1 to 1 1/2 loop. I cut 1 1/2 coil off the front of my 66 and 1 coil off the rear. Has a nice stance now with a slight rake to it. Check the last pic in my signature.
