: Need bigger coils

I just put in factor replacement coils on my 67 chevelle and the rear sits lower than what it did before. What (larger) springs fit so i can get more height. The stock springs are 12.5" - i need coils that are around 14" high. Any suggestions on what to use. I want to use coils if possible and stay away from air shocks or bags.

Thanks

Dan

I'm having the same issue with my '66. I love the stance of it now, but the springs are so maxed out it corners like "POO". If you don't mind, I'll tag along and try and get some help too.

Thanks,

I had a similar problem with my 'Camino. Bought new aftermarket, stiffer, springs as part of a total suspension upgrade including No-Hop bars. Discovered that the No-Hops and El Caminos don't get along, the top of the No-Hops put dents in the box when the box is loaded. Another inch and a half was all I needed. (Just like my wife...) At this point, I was satisfied with the stiffness of the springs, just not the ride height.

I went to a home improvement store, bought two PVC pipe thingies-round discs with a "donut hole" in the middle. I have no idea what the hell they are SUPPOSED to be for, but they're in the PVC pipe section, and about 1 1/2 inches thick and the diameter of a rear spring, with ribs for strength molded in. I solvent-welded a small piece of PVC pipe in the "donut hole" to help locate the spring. I stuck 'em up inside the frame at the top of the spring, and they've been there for, oh, about five years or more. Total cost was about ten bucks, plus the time I spent wandering around in the store looking at PVC fittings.

Hey, I'd describe 'em better if I was a plumber. Sorry.

Could I use adjustable air shocks in the back to raise the rear an inch and make it a stiffer suspension? If so, what kind

Thanks

Far as I'm concerned, air shocks are hateful devices. An air bag or two, maybe. You're best off to just get the correct springs for your application.

Keep in mind that you want the rear lower control arms to be level with the ground when the car is at normal ride height, or you're gonna have no end of wheel hop problems.

Well i know when i replaced the springs on my car the previous owner put el camino springs (cargo) on my car and it sat about 2" higher then it does now, the car sits LOW in the back now. I like it but i can see where some wouldn't. Look up cargo or el camino springs they should jack it up a bit in the back. Stay away from air shocks, those things are bad news.

why are air shocks so bad? My neighbor has been running coils, air bags, and air shocks in his 68 chevelle and never had problems. I rode in his car and if felt just the same as my new oem coils. He has the shocks at 60 psi. His contal arms slope slightly downward towards the rear and drags his car with no wheel hop. I've heard some say that the ride is bad with air, but his car felt fine. His car has 610 hp without juice.

Air shocks will break the upper shock mount if you get too carried away with pressure in them. I like air bags inside the coil springs, for an easy 1-2" lift.

Use the rear springs for the station wagon. The other thing I have done in the past is use springs from the full size body - Impala Body.

I had air shocks in my car when i bought it and man oh man was the ride terrible to what it is now with gas shocks. I don't feel bumps for near as long as i did with air shocks.

From this all I guess air shocks are not a good investment. But as far as raising the ride height 1", what is the best and safest way. What coils are out there that are known to add height?

Thanks for all the help

Dan,

I am going through the same dilemma with my 70. I purchased monroe air shocks, but all my friends said no to air shocks so here they sit unopened. I just installed an AirLift 1000 kit and it will raise the car an inch or two but definitely stiffens the ride at higher air pressure. I am not digging them either. I am now going to remove them and get the correct heavy duty oem replacement springs and get back to reality.
