: Mag Hubcaps. Who loves 'em?
droptop396 Feb 21st, 10, 11:40 PM Me!
I have wanted a set of correct mag hubcaps for my 66 for a long time.
Never have I found a set in person that have ever been nice enough to consider putting on any of my 66s. The two nicest caps I acquired over many years were still only driver condition. I am thinking about laying down the cash and purchasing a nice set. I have 5 really nice sets of the 67 and later mag caps, but not correct for my 66, so I have not put them on my car. I just wanted to see if anybody else really likes the caps as much as I do.

I think it's time to sell a set or two of your later covers to finance a set for your '66!
66 MYSTERY CHEVELLE Feb 21st, 10, 11:50 PM I love em !!
Yes, expensive to get the Show Quality ones, but worth it.

Yes that will probably become a reality. I am obsessive compulsive over the the factory mag caps. I keep buying the nice ones that I find even though they are the not the ones I need.
Hence the 5 sets. I would like to get the Mag Caps, a Gardiner exhaust system, and my Speakers restored for my AM/FM multiplex set-up. Oh and a nice set of correct black 66 deluxe seat belts. That would really fine tune the appearance of my car. I knew Mike would be on the list for liking the Mag Caps! That Danube Blue SS looks mighty fine with those caps on it!

I think it's the only way to go if you have a 66 SS. I have a set on my 66 but they are only driver quality. I'm always on the lookout for even one that would improve the leat of the five I have. I don't think I'll ever have a perfect set. The show quality are just too $$.
I'm surprised they are not being reproduced. They are reproducing 65 caps for my 65 vette and I would think there are more 65-66 chevelles than 65 vettes out there today.

Part numbers: 551851 = 1965, 1966 _______ 552205 = 1967 and later
Appearance: The center cap on the 65, 66 is raised above the spokes / straight spokes. The spokes have a curve on the 67 and later, the 67 and later have larger cooling slots.
First pic is 65-66, Second pic is 67 and later

GSMCGSMC Feb 22nd, 10, 9:26 AM Todd, so you're the guy that has all the 67 and up Mag caps huh? I think what you need to do is make some room for the 65-66 caps you want by selling me a set of 67 caps:D. For me, the mag caps are THE best looking choice.

I will let you guys know when I get over my sickness :)
Hard for me to part with any of my 66-67 Chevelle parts.
Might see me on that hoarder show someday, you'll see me divorced and nothing but tiny paths to barely move around my house because it will be filled with Chevelle parts. ;)
Well hopefully not, but it does feel like I keep too many parts sometimes.

grandsport Feb 22nd, 10, 10:33 AM I always did like them,my dad had a set on his 67 Caprice.
droptop396 Feb 22nd, 10, 10:39 AM I'm surprised they are not being reproduced.
With the kind of luck I have. They will be announcing that they are being reproduced a couple of days after I make an expensive purchase on a set. I agree with you on this one.
Surprised, but maybe too expensive to re-tool this one?? I guess on another note, I don't think they should. My car has a really nice simulated wood steering wheel. It was a rather rare piece, but now it's the norm because every tom, dick, and harry has one in their car due to the cheesy re-pop of that part (the reproductions are horrible). I kind of like it when rare things stay rare. If people really want one they should do it the old school way and hunt one down, and even pay the price if is a rare part. That's my thought anyway.

Gary, that brings up good memories for me. My dad also had a 67 Caprice when I was growing up. Big block car with ALL the options. Loved that car. His did not have the accessory mag wheel covers though. That would have made that car even better.
:)
^
Krister Feb 22nd, 10, 11:03 AM My plan is to have a set of 14" redline tires/wheels with the mag covers for my car. As well as a set of 15" RWL tires with '67 trim rings.
The original mag style wheel covers were the only items that traveled from owner to owner with my car. 1 has a little curb rash the others are nice.
droptop396 Feb 22nd, 10, 11:28 AM Would love to see photos of Chevelles with the simulated mag wheel covers.
If any body has photos post them-up. We can turn this into the official mag wheel hubcap information and photo thread.

My Dad's was Originally Black with Black Vinyl top w/ light blue bucket seat interior.
He had it painted a nice blue metallic. 396, TH400, buckets, console, PW, PB, Power driver seat, Tilt, Wood Wheel, A/C, AM/FM-8 track.
There was a restored low mileage Black on Black 67 Caprice Loaded w/options in Hemmings a few years back. Missed it by a week. Buyer was having it shipped to Norway. It was a good price too.

SS4Real Feb 22nd, 10, 11:59 AM I like them now. When I was a kid, I did not. You either had "real mag wheels" or you had those funny looking hubcaps. But now, they look cool. I would put them back on and, if my budget allowed, have a second set of wheels and tires for the day 2 look.

Isn't that something, and you and me had matching blue and white Blazers.
Rich-L79 Feb 22nd, 10, 12:30 PM If you have to have hubcaps, they are the best looking of the bunch. But I still prefer road wheels (69-70 SS wheels and 71-72 SS wheels in particular) or certain aftermarket vintage mag wheels. Not much looks better than a vintage set of Torq Thrusts.
RAIDER SS Feb 22nd, 10, 1:12 PM Back in the 70's when I was a mechanic; we HATED those wheel covers......way too heavy....scratched the hell outta the wheels....and they were just FAKE mag covers. We called them "falseys".
Now; I think they are way cool as they represent that particular era of the Chevelle. I too wish I could afford a set to accompany their own set of steel wheels and tires (they still do dig into the wheels). :D
mino65 Feb 22nd, 10, 10:05 PM I also like them.I have a set of 67 up in my shop, the 205s.What i am lookin for are the 15 in.ones to put over my ralleys for a different look once in a while. I was thinkin about painting my 14 in.ralleys black and using these 205s .

I agree with you. I have original 65 spinner caps on my vette that are not perfect but they are still GM vs. the Chinese made (I believe) repros. I got a better price on my 65 vette caps when repros showed up. I think the re-tooling og the vette spinner caps has to be more expensive than the 65-66 mag caps. I would also say at least twice the market as well.
The one benefit of the repros are that they will somewhat bring down the price of used originals and make the originals a little more affordable for us.
NOS are in a league of their own.

Those pop up every now and then. kind of rare, but even the really nice ones are not terribly priced as the isn't as much demand for the 15" caps. I believe they were full size Chevrolet only and not sure for which model years. (Maybe 1969, 1970?? I don't know).

I am not here to argue with you Chris, I really don't appreciate the insinuation that I am trying to beat the system but underhandedly sneaking in a "Wanted Ad" I don't need you to leave comments like giving me the "Benefit of the doubt". Your not a moderator and I clearly don't appreciate you passing judgment on my character.

 Relax Todd. I didnt accuse you of anything so stop acting defensive and making it sound like im trying to start s*&t with you. All I said was it almost read as an wanted ad. Since you know the rules, you have also been here long enough to see posts by others in the past that have attempted to disguise it as a want ad all the while claiming that its not. I dont care for you passing judgement on my character either. I dont see "moderator" by your name as well so chill out.

droptop396 Mar 2nd, 10, 4:43 PM Question?????
I have had many mag hubcap sets over the years, and really only had one car that I drove with the mag hubcaps on it (65 Chevelle convertible) You might recognize the car Dan has it now in Iowa.
1. How well do these stay on?
2. What is the best method for installing and removing the simulated mag wheel covers without damaging them?

66 MYSTERY CHEVELLE Mar 2nd, 10, 7:56 PM TRUST ME. They won't come off!! Quite the opposite. They will Bite into your steel wheels and actually ruin them for any future use without the caps on. Which gets to the next issue: getting them off is sometimes hard to do without denting or bending the edges. Careful and deliberate is the way to go. I use my my hands and work em and pull. :D

I was just worried because the caps are so heavy. I was comparing them in my mind to the 1964 Chevelle SS hubcaps which are also heavy and kind of notorious for coming off from what I have heard. I have an extra set of 5 steel wheels that will be dedicated to the mag caps (got to have a black rim for the spare as well). especially after putting together the really nice set of steel wheels that I had painted Blue for my dog dish caps. Thanks for the information. I will be excited to get the mag caps installed on my car.

I have always thought they looked best on 66/67 Chevelles. Part of the reason I like them is that they were trendy in 1967. They even offered them on the newly reintroduced 1967 Jeepster. Another reason I like them is that you really don't see them that often. Years ago everyone was putting Rally Wheels on their Chevelles. When I got my Chevelle in 1985 I got busy searching for Mag Style Wheel Covers right away. I was tired of seeing all the "Third Hand Chevies" with all the incorrect parts on them and decided I wanted the stock look for mine (plus it is a family heirloom). Below is an old picture of my car taken by me in 1996. The car still looks just the same in 2010.

black64ss Mar 3rd, 10, 4:39 PM I really like those caps, especially when the inside part where the lug nuts are is painted black. I really love my 64ss stock caps and they will always stay on my car but I would'nt mind grabbing a set of driver quality mag caps just to trow on for a weekend. They look great on the 65's so I just wanna see how they would look on a 64.

70cko4sp Mar 11th, 10, 9:54 PM I saw one of those caps on the American Pickers show last Monday night. They were going through a guys junk yard and were checking out a 68-69 Camaro SS hood with the ice cube tray louvers still on it. Funny thing is they walked right past one of those hubcaps lying on the ground and they never even looked back. I felt like calling them and telling them what they had missed. They ended up buying an old Plymouth for $5000 from another hoarder down the road. Turns out it was only worth around $3000.
