Can anyone tell me how to remove the seatbelt from the retractor? I installed a set of shoulder belts in my 67 El Camino. Problem is the belts are too long...they don't retract fully leaving about 8-12 inches of slack in the belt, which is unaatractive when the car is sitting, and gets in the way when you get in and close the door (they invariably end up in the door opening, and more than once I have closed the door on it. I would like to shorten the belt by about 12"...I think this is a generic 'one size fits none' belt, although the mounts were correct for my application.!

May be easier to cut the buckle end off and have it shortened on that end. Im sure someone could sew the buckle back on.

Not familiar with the generic retractors.
I disassembled the factory lap belt retractors on my 67.

I removed the plastic cover/housing, pulled the belts out all the way, and found the belt is just wrapped around a (spring tensioned) knurled shaft with a metal clip-over retainer. It would be pretty easy to trim some off that end and reassemble. I did have to replace a shaft that holds the two metal pieces together, it was swaged on the ends and has been replaced with a 12-24 screw and nylock.

I understand it isn't retracting that last 8"; but do you have additional belt length to remove? Can you pull out 8-10" more belt than you need to buckle up?

Yeah, it is plenty long.
