Wanting to rebuild the rear, I stumbled on this, it looks like the race was spinning. So my question is, is it usable? Not sure the cap got like that.

Thanks Jim

Measure the bearing bore and see if it is oversize. Assuming that this is a 12 bolt, most bearing bores in the 12 bolt are 3.064 inches. 3.062 would be ideal, but most of them that I measure are a little oversize. If it's over 3.064 then I would not want to use it like it is. You could have it repaired, but I don't know what the cost would be.

I forgot to mention this is a 10 bolt, I will measure it in the next couple days and write back what I get. Do you happen to know the bore size for the 10 bolt?
Thanks BGH

All I have is calipers the reading I got is 2.894 to 2.895 at the most.

This should be the bearing race for the 10 bolt - 8.2 and 8.5
NATIONAL Part # LM501314 {Taper Bearing Cup; Outer Diameter=2.891" Length=0.6537" Radius=0.03"}
Yours seems a little large but get Freddie's opinion.

You need something more accurate to measure it with. If it's more than .002 oversize then I would have it fixed or replace it.

I agree, Have seen some guy's put very thin shim under the race. I would not do it.

Any thoughts on these? They will be going in a 66 chevelle.

This one is probably the best for a street car. The '65 is the same as the '66. Later rear ends are different, but will still work.

I really don't think it is worth that much, do you?

No, but the price of the '65 to '67 rear ends is higher than the rest. If you want one that is correct for your car it's going to be expensive. I think you can find one cheaper if you look a while. Maybe you can talk this guy down a few hundred dollars.

I agree that the 12 bolt price for that 65 open unit is high. It should have a posi for that kind of money, and be usable as is, or already rebuilt. Also, 65 12 bolt units should not be as pricey as 66 and 67 units. In 1965 every 327 equipped car had one, but in 66 they were less common because most 327s got 10 bolts and that left 12 bolts mostly for the big block cars. Similar situation in 67 with mostly big blocks and L79 smallblocks getting 12 bolts.

If a 10 bolt is sufficient for your application, and apparently that was what you was going to use, then a 10-bolt will be much more aaffordable. Most people have trouble getting rid of them. Buy one like this:

I paid $25 for a 66 10 bolt a couple of years back. I bought it just to use to roll my 66 El Camino around while rebuilding a 12 bolt.

I did email that guy and I also talked to this guy http://milwaukee.craigslist.org/pts/1599029069.html, it looks to me like an 8.5 rear with the tabs on the bottom. Not sure I want to do that though.

Wow, somebody should snatch that one up quick. The 8.5 A body rear ends are hard to find, and that one is cheap. It will be an inch wider than your '66 rear end.

These are the numbers I got off of it. It also has a big "A" in the casting on top of it. Can anyone identify?
