: Salvage yards wising up!
Randy Mosier May 8th, 04, 5:13 PM I just checked on a complete tall spindle brake setup for my 71. I asked for a price on everything, spindles, rotors, calipers, booster and master cyl. The guy I do most of my business with went up quite a bit. Six months ago, he quoted a price of $90. Now he's up to $200! They know about this swap and they know the demand is there! Pretty soon, there won't a lower priced alternative for installing disc brakes.
Cambo3 May 8th, 04, 5:37 PM Well Randy that $200.00 is still a far cry from some of the after market kits you can get from Baer, Stainless, PST or sone of the parts houses like Yearone or OPG I would snap that up before it goes higher
doggy69 May 8th, 04, 6:09 PM Id buy a rear disc setup for my 12 bolt anyday for $200
Randy Mosier May 9th, 04, 6:50 PM Yeah, but you have to factor in all the other parts you have to buy to make this work. The lower ball joints have to be machined. The outer tie rods have to be replaced. If you have clearance issues, you may have to spring for the tubular upper control arms instead of the offset shafts. Generally, you have to replace the rotors and calipers right away, so you're only taking the calipers from the salvage yard for cores. At $200, it's still better than a kit from Stainless or MP, but it won't be that way for long if the used stuff keeps going up like this.
John_Muha May 9th, 04, 7:18 PM Things keep rising here also Randy. They boned me $15.00 for a used speedometer. 3 years ago I could have bought the whole sweep cluster for that.
Randy Mosier May 10th, 04, 12:10 AM Dammit! And I have a complete sweep cluster from a 71 I would have given you for shipping.
1966_L78 May 10th, 04, 12:14 PM Yeah, used to happen to me all the time...
Sometimes its funny thinking that these guys are in business to make money, yet they often "cut off their nose despite their face."
I tried to buy a piece of trim (valence trim below the grill on a 66). The yard would only sell me the whole grill and pieces for $200, so I went back out with a yardman to pull it, and we both noticed the grill was bent and torn. The manager wouldn't drop the price OR sell individually... That car ended up sitting there for at least another 4 years until it was crushed, and the pieces were still on it then...
Same yard, I went in one day after school (dressed nicely), and checked on some trim for my brothers Scout... The manager wanted $150... 2 weeks later, I went in with my brother, and we were dirty from working on the car... We asked the counter guy how much they wanted, and the manager came over and said $30 (huge difference)... I honestly think he just figured he could get more from a nicely dressed person...
Thats why I like the Pick-N-Pull type lots (at least around here). They have all the prices listed out front. They usually give me some small pieces for free, but I have never been surprised by sudden price changes

Suspected it was really the odometer that was bound up but too lazy to change the odometer and try the speedometer again. Never figured they raised up the price that high on those things.

Just surprised sometimes on where they raised the prices to. A HEI module is now around $15.00 and I don't have a clue if it's any good. Suspect I'm one of the few people paying for them 'cause most are gone and the price is terrible. I asked them last time how many modules they really sell.
Derek69SS May 11th, 04, 10:41 AM They go for about $50 here. When things slow down a bit for me, I'd be glad to help find a cheaper pair. I'll be pulling them off my dad's '92 caprice parts-car when we finally junk it, but that might be a while.
elcamino72 May 11th, 04, 12:19 PM $15 for a used module is NUTS, I can get new Delco modules for $27 and the Sorenson's for $13.
CRAZY
Silver69Camaro May 11th, 04, 12:55 PM Yeah, usually when I go to a certain junk yard around here, and say I want to buy a part that $25 new, he'll say "I'll take $20 for it". I reply, "How about $10, they sell for $25 new." Usually he'll reply "Then go buy a new one."
I call it dumb business practices. He's not going to sell the part before the car gets crushed, so he just lost $10-15.
What I thought was funny is that he sells used Vortec heads for the same price you can buy rebuilt ones at any machine shop. His loss.
