Does anyone know of a free utility to format your drive? I want to recycle my laptop but want to wipe it clean before. You can't boot XP in dos to do a fromat so I don't know what to do here.

Thanks,

Mike

This doesn't format ,it wipes the drive clean.
Formatting still leaves a readable disk if you know what your doing
It takes a while to do a full wipe http://suhd.com/hard-drive-eraser/

Find out what brand of drive you have in the computer. Then go to that manufacturer's website and see if they have a utility disk you can download to do the job. Most hard drive manufacturers have free software that will do that for your drive.

Smashing the drive makes only slightly less sense than smashing the RAM to make sure nobody could read it. Ha!

All you really need to do is format the drive and then start writing junk files onto it til it gets full. Of course its easier to use a utility than copy files.

Makes less sense? A couple good wacks with a 6lb sledge and the hard drive becomes useless. Once you hear the platters rattling around inside, you are set. We use Kill Disk here at work, but when we have an old SCSI disk array or something where we are unable to use Killdisk, off to the AC room with the sledge we go.

BTW, a wipe of a 160 GB drive using a DOD wipe with several passes, can take the better part of a day. The sledge takes a few seconds. :D

Also if you are recycling your pc, you may look at the place you are taking it. Several places around here have state/gov contracts to either wipe or shred media that is recycled.

Yes, and not only does it save valuable time... it certainly can contribute to the start, or the end of a wonderful day!
