My brother (sams66elke) is having trouble getting the brakes to work on his 68 elke with factory 4 piston disks. He asked me to post this for him since he has to work tonight and was hoping for an answer when he gets home in the morning.
He bought a set of rebuilt calipers to fit a 68 chevelle, but when he bolted them in place the caliper doesn't line up correctly over the rotor causing the outer pad to lock against the rotor. He says it also looks like the piston is fully compressed on the outboard side.
The casting number he gave me for the caliper is 5456008/5455946 (2 halves), is it possible he was given the wrong calipers or can he get put washers on the bolts to serve as spacers?

Rod...I have the 4 piston discs on my 68 Chevelle. I know pretty much all there is to know about these brakes cause I completely rebuilt the whole set-up. It's difficult to diagnose without looking at it. Off the top of my head I'm wondering if the rotors are correct.
A few questions: Was this an original 4 piston set-up, or was this a drum brake car. There are 3 important parts you must have for 4 piston discs. The correct 67/68 rotors, backing plates and calipers. If any of these parts are from a single piston (69 and later) system, you will have problems...Bill

He bought the car only a couple weeks ago but the brakes were working at that time and he drove it home from Dallas.
He lost brakes just as he got it home and removed the stock calipers to rebuild them but found them too pitted to seal. He ordered a replacement set from a local auto parts store and these are the replacements. They appeared to him to be the same as his cores so he turned in his cores and took these home to install them. Since it was a working system when he left Dallas I have to assume the remaining pieces at least matched his original cores. Is it possible he was given "B" body calipers? He matched them against corvette calipers and they are definitely not vette units.
Sorry I can't give more detail, I've had 4 piston disks on a 68 Camaro and 69 Vette, but I haven't seen his yet.

So the rotors were not changed. I know if you try to put 69 rotors on the 68's you will have a rubbing problem. I can't look at the part numbers on my 68 cause it's put away for the next month or so. I would call Stainless steel Brakes and ask them for a good part no. They rebuild these everyday and I'm sure they can tell you if you have the correct part no.

I found a set on ebay and the number matches his so I guess he has other issues. I know he will be checking in this morning after he gets a few hours rest. (graveyards are a &!^@%!)
