I would like to change from manual to power steering on my 70. A friend of mine has a bunch of power steering boxes available (he has been parting cars for years). He said I can take my time and go through them all to find the one I want. I can identfy the correct box as far as fit goes, but what should I look for when choosing? What is the best or preferred ratio? Also, are there date codes on the boxes? Thanks, Tim

I wrote a paper on converting a car with a slower ratio steering gear to a more modern fast ratio 12.7:1 steering gear. If you have manual steering, you will also require a new pitman arm, pump brackets, hoses, and probably a new or an additional pulley on the crankshaft.

You can find my papers at www.corvettefaq.com/A-car.asp (http://www.corvettefaq.com/A-car.asp) and download the following:

A-Car Fast Ratio Steering Gear Upgrade Instructions

Caprice, MC & Buick Fast Ratio Gears (85-96)

Grand Cherokee Fast Ratio Gears (92 1/2-98)

There may be other papers at that sight that could be of interest as well.
