: Disc conversion without booster,
Airfed Feb 17th, 10, 10:37 PM Hello, Im starting on my brakes now and was wanting to keep it simple, Can I convert my front drum 1972 velle to discs in the front using the manual brake booster the car already has, it is in great shape but just want discs up front. Does anybody make a kit for my car that comes with the necessary parts required to pull this off? Thanks for the help and imput guys! :)
GenPac Feb 17th, 10, 11:03 PM adding a brake booster is not difficult and is recommended if your engine creates sufficient vacuum.
The factory booster is 11" but you can use smaller units 9", dual 8" diaphragms are available too.
Are you thinking of buying a kit or piecing it together yourself?
There are alot of offerings from our supporting vendors here at Team Chevelle.
There is no such thing as a manual brake booster. If it has a booster, it's power brakes. No booster = manual brakes. Did you mean manual M/C? You can't use your OE manual drum/drum M/C for two reasons... 1, resevoir is too small, not enough volume for disc, and two, you have residual pressure valves in the outlets of the M/C that I don't think can be removed easily. You'll also need to either get a distribution block that is proportioned for a disc/drum setup, or plumb in an adjustable proportioning valve somewhere on the rear drum line, to set brake bias.
Clear as mud? :p
RAMBO Feb 18th, 10, 12:30 AM To answer the question- Simply yes.
There are kits available that don't include the master cylinder & booster- but have everything else. So you can go to a parts store, and get a master cylinder for a 1970 442 with MANUAL disk/drum brakes.
(the 70 442 W30 cars had manual disk brakes becuase of its big cam/low vacume)
Everything else in the kit will work.
I'm about to do my own disk conversion and will also be using a manual master setup instead of the booster- i like the cleaner look, and the extra pedal feel you get with unboosted brakes

I believe a 75-77 Malibu had a 15/16" bore manual disc/drum master. If you find that 1" bore a little too stiff! Raybestos #MC39946
If I am reading his title right, (Conversion without booster) I think he wants to know if he can run discs without a booster. He said using the original "manual brake booster", but I thnk he meant "manual brake MC" Val, correct me if I am wrong.
Airfed Feb 18th, 10, 12:01 PM Your right, the manual set up! Thanks all for the great info, kind of new at this! but love the challenge!!

Yeah, can't use the drum/drum M/C.
We do offer manual disc brake conversions kits.

DSS72 Feb 19th, 10, 6:12 PM PM sent on original booster & MC.
I installed the Ground Up front disc conversion kit on my 66 last fall without a booster. It came with a new mc and proportioning valve. Works great, with both the new front discs and the existing 1966 rear 9 in drums. Mounted and fit great.
When I was buying it, I believe they said it was the exact same kit, just without the booster.
