Hi guys,
I need some advice, can I restore this Dash Carrier or should I just go ahead and buy a new one? This looks like its been painted with a silver paint and not chromed. I would like to use this carrier as it is original to this car. I have removed the gauge cluster and all hardware from the carrier. So any past experience with this or input concerning this would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
David

David, You can have it restored. Most of the repo are painted silver I believe. If you do a search you will find a lot of info, and I know the question about having the dash carrier rechromed was just asked a few days ago. It's not cheap to have done. I would love to find an original for my car and I would have it restored.

The repops scream just that. I can see them a mile away. I would do whatever I could to reuse yours. You'd be surprised how well a little work will pay off. Get your housing bare. Take it out on the lawn or somewhere gentle and make sure it is supported well. Wash two or three times with warm soapy (dishsoap) water and a scrub brush. Rinse well, let dry. I used Krylon semi-black and detailed the chrome trim with one of those chrome pens you can get at Beverly's (a craft store). It looks awesome, and it costs less than $10!!!

Just saw a new silver leafing pen the other day. Probably the same as those silver modeling pens, but the cap looked shinier. :D

Personally I would try & restore the original as I think the ropops look tacky. Before I knew better I ordered one for my car (Forest Green LS6) opened the box took a look & phoned Ground Up & told them I was returning it. Guy said they had never had a complaint well you got one now! luckily my buddy Frank (paint delete Hugger Orange LS6 4 spd absolutely the nicest resto I have ever seen ) rebuilt mine & did an incredible job.
