Well I bought a powdercoating gun at harbor freight with the intent of doing my own parts that would fit in the kitchen oven. However Ive read now that the wouldnt be such a good idea because the oven would be permantly contaminated and there is a risk of explosion due to the vapors produced during the curing process.
anyone have some insight on this?

Start looking for a Craigslist Convection oven to dedicate to your powdercoating!

I watched one of the shows on PowerBlock on Spike (Horstpower TV or Musclecar) where they baked cookies with the parts they were powedercoating. I guess is has something to do with the type of powedercoat you use.
I googled it and here is some info - http://www.custompowdercoating.com/green.aspx
There is others that say it's mildly toxic. I'm sure it's different manuf to manuf.

well that may or may not be true...much like Aspertame in your diet soda! I try to avoid it. There is a difference between cured and un-cured paint/powder. What is true is that it is a good way to get a divorce if you are looking for one. :)
You don't want to powdercoat in your home oven. Look for a used one. A convection oven is best because it removes the heating elements from the cooking portion, blows hot air with a fan, and keeps much more even temperature throughout the oven.

Do what I did...
Bought Momma a new latest/greatest oven (major brownie points!) and moved the "old" one out into my shop for my powdercoating. ;)

Ahhhh. Using their own tactics against them. Well played.

The rest of the story...
The "tactics" backfired on me John. The new oven no longer matched the existing fridge so I had to buy a new one of those too.
And no need for another fridge in my garage so I gave it away.

I completely understand that. It amazing how much perfectly working stuff has been sold or given away because it didn't match and 'needed' to be replaced. It least you didn't have to replace the cabinets and counter-tops...or did you??? ;)

I went the Wild Bill route also. Locally we have Goodwill and St. Vincent DePaul thrift stores, you might pick up a nice one for under $100.
I would discourage double duty for the kitchen oven, the powder will make the whole house smell funky.

I have a Toaster Oven for small parts & a kitchen oven for anything else that will fit. I think that a kitchen oven will be larger than that HF oven & a better value. OR you could build your own http://forum.caswellplating.com/oven-building-forum/
