: Hard to steer... Steering pump, or gear box problem?

My car has a problem with steering... When going slow, like in a turning into a parking spot or a 3 point turn- or even when the car is just stopped and you try to crank the wheel either way- the wheel is real hard to turn and is jerky. There is a loud squeeling sound from up front.

This happens usually after the car is warm and has been driven for a while, but sometimes also happens when its cold/just started.

I've tried putting it in neutral and reving up the engine (spinnning the pump faster) to see if that would help, but it doesn't.

Any ideas if this could be the Steering Pump, or the Gear box?

This has been driving me nuts since I got the car last year, and I want to get it fixed.

Thanks-
Ben

sounds like a pump to me.

Forgive me for stating the obvious, but is the fluid level OK? redface.gif

yes, pump is full & doesn't leak a drop- actually i wonder if that may be the problem- previous owner stated that it DID leak, but he had put stop leak in it... May have stopped the leaks, and proper operation at the same time...

Stop leak - high pressure system does not sound like a good combo

Have had this problem in two cars. Changing the pump helped in both cases.
