I have a 1972 El Camino that my dad and I have been restoring. We found a 12 bolt posi rear end that we would like to put in it, but we aren't really up to date on the differences between all the rear ends. This rear end we found came out of a '68 Buick, and bolted right up to a '69 El Camino (from what the owner says). What modifications would need to be done for the 12 bolt to be put into my '72?

im sure if it was an A-body buick it would fit right in. but im sure it should fit and work anways... B.O.P buick, olds, and pontiac parts interchange. im not sure on all parts but i know alot do. good luck.

if the rear end is already ina 69 it should fit right up into your 72. everything there is the same.

Chances are if its a "12 bolt" in a buick, its a BOP 12 bolt, not a chevy 12 bolt...
They are different.

They will both bolt into your car just fine- but the BOP 12 bolt is only an 8.5 ring gear (10 bolt ring great, 12bolt COVER), vs the chevy 12bolt which is 8.9 ring gear with 12 bolts on the gear and on the cover.

Jody, are there any casting numbers on the center section or numbers stamped on the forward side of the passenger side axle tube?

Thanks everyone for your help. We ended up passing on the rear end. By any chance, does anyone have an actual gm Chevrolet 12 bolt laying around?
