I would like to use 11" drums on front & rear of my 65 chevelle. What donor cars should I look for?

Very hard to find originals. They were on special equipped vehicles only like police and some on wagons. I did read an article on 11" aftermarket drums for rear that sounded good. Comes complete with all brake parts mounted to the backing plates & finned drums. Just change out the backing plates and re connect everything. Might have been in hot rod a couple months ago. I will look for the article

With reasonably priced disc brake conversion kits available, why do you want to convert to 11-inch drums? For a lot less trouble and money you can convert to discs that will stop the car much better.

Found the article. Go to www.mpbrakes.com. (http://www.mpbrakes.com.) The rear 11" complete drum setup is about half of aftermarket rear disc brakes. For the front you could use the standard 70-72 chevelle, monte carlo disc setup. They are real easy to find. I got a complete used setup for $275. You can expect to spend another $200-300 refurbishing everything & more if you want a show setup. I believe 73 and newer uses 11" disc's but not sure if its a direct swap like the 70-72 ?

Good luck

I took my conversion for my 64 out of a 78 Z28. Tall spindles with 11" rotors. I also used the portion valve from the same car.

Suspension parts to go with tall spindle from a 1978 T/A

Required:
This is for a 64 Chevelle with an 11/16 drag link you will have to match Camaro outside tire rod OD size to your inner tie rod size so your sleeves will tighten.

Camaro Upper Ball joints Moog- K5208 they will bolt in without drilling out holes. Bolts point up when installing.

Lower Camaro Ball joint machined to fit Chevelle lower A Arms opening. Purchased from Malibu Performance. 1-818-222-6725. Or you can have them machined to fit your lower "A" Arms.

Auto Zone
Camaro outer tie rod Moog or McQuay Norris numbers are the same ES441RL.
Chevelle inner tie rod 1971 to 1972 Moog ES406L
Sleeves Moog ES2004S.

MOOG
Upper control “A” Arm offset kit Moog K5250
You will have to find out who carries Moog
Provides additional caster adjustment.
I later went to Global West upper control "A" Arms

Bought the following Camaro Parts for the year car the spindles came off of.
Disc rotors- new
Calipers- rebuilt
Brake hose-new
Bearings- new
Seals- new

Everything works. I changed the Brake booster to a ford 8" dual diaphragm booster.

Some of the later model A bodies may have the 11" rear drum. I bought a 77 LeMans Enforcer (police car) to part out. It has 11" front disc brakes and 11" rear drum brakes. The drum set up will be a direct bolt on while the front disc will need the parts as Brob posted above. Another car I have seen with the 11" rear drums was a 70 Impala wagon.

BTW Brob the tie rod ends from a G body will fit the spindles and the have the correct thread for the sleeve on the early Chevelles. Part # is ES2033RL.

I put 11 rear backing plates, with new drums, etc from a 76 Monte Carlo on my 69 Olds. I believe they will bolt to your 64 chevelle axle also. I discovered that station wagons use 11 brakes where cars of the same year used the 9 inch. I recommend what the above say about going to disc on front instead of bigger drums. Drums will never be as good as disc in front in my opinion.

thanks for your replies everyone. i'm a little low on doe rite now, and i thought if i could find some inexpensive 11"er's to use, they would be a lot cheaper than discs. my 9.5's have a tendency to fade. i'll keep my eyes open for the 11" rears mentioned, but i'm still wondering about 11" fronts! perhaps an impala?

Working off memory, I thought you could get 11" front drums on 73-74 Chevelle's and Monte Carlos? Maybe check with your GM dealership or a preferred parts store to confirm.
