I would like to get some KYB shocks for my 1967 chevelle. It is lowered about 1 1/2 inches. how do you decide which shock size to get? Lenght, firmness, etc. thanks

The lowering of the car by 1.5 inches won't change what shock you can use. Preference, cost and intended use determine what shock you use. For most normal use cars the KYB's seem popular. I tend toward Bilstein's and Koni's as my shocks of choice but they are very spendy for little if any noticable ride difference than from a KYB in NORMAL street use. The life of the Koni's and Bilstein's is much longer and they do respond better under extreme conditions.

How much do you have to lower a car to change what shock you use.

I don't think you'd ever HAVE to use a shorter shock when lowering the vehicle. The shock should be good for the full travel of the suspension. All you're doing when lowering it is that, at ride height, the shock won't be in the middle of it's own travel, it'll be lower (internally). Since the suspension is lower also, it shouldn't effect the shock. Suspension travel is the same, you've just changed ride height to a lower point in the travel.

Ideally, you'd want the shock centered at ride height but I don't know that there is really any benefit or necessity in that.
