Fellas,

I have an original '69 SS that I am restoring. It came factory with a 4 speed without the console. It currently has a '67 M20 and to make it work, the previous owner cut out some of the shifter hump on the driver's side so the shifter would fit/clear and be able to shift into 1st/2nd & reverse. It currently has a Hurst shifter. Why doesn't the trans/shifter line up right? Is it the shifter or the older trans?

I would like to put a console in the car, but after`looking at the current line up issues, I know it would not work. It won't work now with the uncut 4 speed non-console shifter hump and I'm positive it wouldn't work with the 4 speed console shifter hump. Any thoughts?

Thanks all!
Jay

It is the shifter. You will need a shifter body that puts the handle in the center of the hump to work with the console. The transmission is not the problem, both years use the same extension housing. Check out a Hurst shifter for the 68-72 models and you will see the difference compared to what you have.

Awsome, thanks for the info and good news. Will the shifter body that works with the console hump work with the non-console hump as well and vise-versa? Should I just try to find a factory shifter body or are there some aftermarket bodies that work a lot better?

Get a Hurst Competition plus shfter for a 69, awesome shifter. Unless you are going for show points SKIP the OE Muncie shifter.

I *think* it is the same shifter for console/non-console (it was a few years ago I looked this up), but the shift handle is different if you have a bench seat, it has a big curve in it.
