: 66 Chevelle SS 4-Speed Stuck in Reverse
slns831 Feb 10th, 10, 4:53 PM I need your guy's help! I have a 1966 Chevelle SS 4-speed that tends to get stuck in reverse if I jam the gear in too hard (reverse.) Getting the car out of reverse is a PAIN since the car is lowered!! I've been told that the shifter control assy. may have worn out the spacers in between the levers where the rods hook up? I may be replacing the control assy. which runs approx. $ 140.00 on www.npdlink.com (http://www.npdlink.com) but I thought I would get your guys expert advice first. Thank you!

bb67H-D Feb 10th, 10, 6:21 PM Al ,
do you have the original muncie shifter or a hurst?
I assume its a muncie.
Make sure you have it adjusted/ aligned correctly as in when in neutral the lever goes fully left to right if it gets hung up/hits lever/s adjust rod/rods so all levers are making a smooth slot.
A hurst also can be adjusted .
I have an original '67 muncie shifter and it works great, quiet and never a missed shift up or down.

Thank you for your prompt reply. Yes, it has the original muncie. I will look into all of what you recommended! Thanks again!

AL, do yourself a favor and install a Hurst Competion Plus shifter. There is a good reason so many guys tore those muncie shifters out years ago and replaced them with the Hurst.
Brettd85 Feb 10th, 10, 9:00 PM My dads M20 original muncie shifter would get stuck in reverse also. It was all in the shifter, not adjustment of the rods. I just had to push hard right and down, it would finally pop out. Took about 10 minutes to get it out the first time until I just used a little force. I replaced it with a new one and its all better.
slns831 Feb 10th, 10, 10:42 PM Brett85,
Thanks for the temporary solution to get out of reverse! When you say, "replaced it with a new one" what exactly did you replace? The same part I was recommended to replace, "shifter control assy? Thanks!
slns831 Feb 10th, 10, 10:53 PM Snap,
You're not the only one that has recommended to pull out the muncie and replace it with a Hurst Competition Plus Shifter! Would I have to replace the rods and everything else or just the shifter assymbley? Thanks!
67shovel Feb 11th, 10, 8:19 AM When you buy a Hurst shifter it comes with everything....rods, mounts. You can get or make an adapter to bolt a municie stick on it if you want the stock look.
slns831 Feb 11th, 10, 11:42 AM Roger,
Thanks for the input! I'm gonna look into pricing and see where I can find the best deal!
Rich-L79 Feb 11th, 10, 2:12 PM There is absolutely nothing wrong with the original Muncie shifter if you have it adjusted properly. If the bushings at the rod ends are loose, replace them and adjust it and it will work just fine. You can insert the rods in the holes closer to the pivot point of the arms on the transmission (for the 1-2 and 3-4 arms) to make it shift firmer and give the handle a shorter throw.

slns831 Feb 11th, 10, 6:18 PM Rich,
Thanks for the info. Cant wait to crawl underneath my car and inspect the arms for the upper holes! I've always wondered why the shift distance was so long!
Any idea where I can purchase just the bushings? Do they make rebuild kits? I'm I better off just buying the whole assymbley? Thanks!
Den's396 Feb 11th, 10, 8:09 PM After 8 years and I do mean 8 years of being hard headed and not wanting to change due to being slightly AINAL I gave in last summer and switched to a hurst comp plus, I can't begin to tell you what a releaf it was to not have that worry of it sticking, jumping in and out of gear,or grinding, not to mention the little problem of sometimes getting under the 66 and beating into a gear.Do yourself a favor and put one in,around 375.00 on e-bay last june.
Alwhite00 Feb 11th, 10, 9:12 PM I had a Hurst Competition plus shifter on a Muncie that I had in a 60 Chevy pickup 20 years ago and I have yet to drive another vehicle that shifted as nice as that one, It was like it was part of my arm, I loved that thing.
