: WIW?? '71 Chevelle SS
6970chevelle Feb 6th, 10, 10:04 PM Hey guys, I have a '71 Chevelle SS that has the original 402 and original Turbo 400 tranny that I am thinking of putting on the market. It is a Canadian built car, I have all the GM of Canada paperwork. Car is bronze with white stripes (originally had black stripes, will be painted shortly), buckets, black vinyl top. VIN tag has not been removed, but previous owner did take off the cowl tag to paint engine bay (yeah, I know, not smart and an awful job at that, as pic will show). Tag matches everything on car, is authentic. I only have a couple of pics of car (poor quality, car was in shed, dimly lit) along with cowl tag, engine stamp, casting date, partial vin. Also have pics of the tranny tag and vin. Just interested in getting a feel for what a fair price would be to ask for the car. The paint on the car is probably a 6-7 out of 10, has CI hood, not sure about rear codes yet. I bought the car a few months ago, engine is out of car. Previous owner was in the process of engine detailing, got in a bind and needed to sell. He didn't know about Canadian cars having paperwork available, sold me car at a great price I think. I am not looking to make alot on the car, but of course would like to get all I can. Any opinions on fair asking price?? I know pics will help, as soon as it gets a little warmer, I will get some more. Should have engine back in car within a couple of months, gonna paint stripes black, do some other detail work on car. Any opinions would be appreciated. Thanks.

6970chevelle Feb 7th, 10, 11:32 AM Wow, no opinions so far, are 71's this unpopular??
jrfan8bud Feb 7th, 10, 1:31 PM I love the 71's. I think the reason you have not received any replies is there is not enough information. We really need more detailed information and pictures to make a educated guess.
I assume you don't know how good the engine and trans. are because they are out of the car and have been since you bought it so all you have to go on is the previous owners word that they are in good working order.
You don't really say much about the condition of the body/floors/ frame ect...just that the paint is a 6-7 out of a 10. We need to see detailed pictures of the body, undercarriage, frame, trunk, around windows ect...
You also say nothing about the condition of the interior. Is it in good shape? Does it need redone? Again we need pictures.
Someone could come on here and throw out a number based on the limited info, I could say anywhere from 10-25k but that is not going to help you very much because that is a big range.
As soon as you get more pictures come back and post them and I bet you more people will be willing to chime in with their opinions.
With it being a Canadian car you are one of the lucky few to have proof of what it is so that is a big plus.
I am in the market for another car and I really like what I see so far so I will be watching.

I appreciate your opinion. Actually, your range does help me. I know I need to get more pics, will be getting them when weather cooperates a little more. You pointed out some items which I do have more info on. The engine has only been out of the car since about June 09, it was in fine running condition as was the tranny (I know the previous owner well, saw the car myself right after he bought it). Interior appears to be original and in very good condition, carpet could probably be freshened up a bit. Body/frame/floors are great, only issue I have found is trunk needs to be detailed a bit. I decided to do as much to engine bay as I can while motor is out, I bought a new wiring harness, radiator and alternator. Had Q-jet rebuilt. Really all the car needs right now is engine reinstalled for it to be in fine running order. I am going to have stripes painted black as per original, and may go ahead and have entire car resprayed, haven't decided yet. There are no rust issues that I have found. Overall, car would be a 7-8 out of 10 IMO. Just don't really know what '71 cars bring, especially with docs. I am way more familiar with '69-'70 cars. Thanks for help. I will post more pics when available. Thanks again.
6970chevelle Feb 15th, 10, 12:03 AM Wow, still waiting on weather to improve to get more pics. Close to 4 inches of snow here in Alabama, I know the rest of you are laughing at us, but hey, 4 inches of snow here is blizzard conditions, we shut down school with a strong gust of wind. Hopefully it will warm up later this week and I can get some really good pics of the body on here. Thanks guys and girls.
EdCarpenter Feb 15th, 10, 5:43 AM Rod,
How far north are you in Alabama? I had a similar colored small block SS as a work car in the 80's. It was a lot of fun.
Once you get additional photos posted, you should get a lot of responses.
6970chevelle Feb 27th, 10, 6:08 PM Finally, weather is fit to get car out of shed and make some pics. Take a look at these, and give me an opinion based on previous post and pics of what this car might be worth. Honest opinions, I am a big boy and can take it!! Thanks in advance.

EdCarpenter Feb 27th, 10, 8:51 PM Rod,
Didn't see the hood with the car. Does it appear there was panel replacement or filler around the wheel openings? Does the vinyl look secure at both corners of the rear glass or is it spongy? Looking under the filler panel, inside the trunk at the rear window area, do you see any rust?
If the car doesn't need body work or a repaint (paint can be salvaged)and all or most engine room parts come with it figuring money would still need to go into the driveline and other miscellaneous costs, I'd say $12K to $14K.

6970chevelle Feb 28th, 10, 6:31 PM I do have cowl hood for the car, and it has had some bodywork done at some point to the rear quarters. So far, no rust issues that I have found, although I will admit I am not a body expert by no means. Vinyl top appears to be in good shape with no visible bubbling around it. Car is complete, just have to get everything back on it or in it. I am replacing engine wiring harness, radiator, brake booster and master cylinder also, along with some interior upgrades. Thanks for the replies.
