I had a brake problem the other day on my 69 elco SS, the brakes were not engaging until the pedal was on the floor... no fluid loss anywhere, so i assumed it was the master cylinder. I got an autozone reman one and was impressed that it even "looked" semi-correct appearance wise. I bench bled it, the installed it. It improved the pedal, but it still seemd like it was going to far down before i got brakes... i bled the front calipers and got a little air out, and the pedal is good, but not great... it travels a good 2-3" before it engages the brakes at all.. .but when it does finally start braking, it stops very well. there doesnt seem to be air anywhere, because you cannot "pump up" the pedal, it trvels the same 3" regardless of how many times you pump the pedal. I was pretty much "satisfied" with it, and to be honest, thats about how much travel i had with the old m/c when it was working. BUT... today i look under the hood and theres a small stream of brake fluid running down the front of my booster, directly under the m/c... the damn seal in the remanufactured m/c must be junk... upsets me because now i have to take the whole thing apart again, then go try to get my money back for a now "used" master cylinder that i painted black, and has been filled with fluid. Does anyone make a "new" (non remanufactured) master cylinder with a close factory appearance? (Double bail wires, 69 disc brake style) Should i try another remanufactured one from the place i got this one? Do you think it was just a fluke, or is this a common problem with rebuilt units? Sorry so long, any reply would be appriciated.

GO TO NAPA
Your Autozone lifetime warranty unit will shorten your lifetime at the next intersection.

I was having sililar problems with AZ reman master cyl's. Tried two, then another gear head there I know told me to goto NAPA. I did I have not had anymore problems, cost a little more, but again no probs. So don't think it's your car causing the problem, it's just the krappy rebuild done by those south of the border.

Find yourself a Bendix M/C...it will be 'exactly' like original even with the zinc phosphate cap. The part number is 11372 for a new m/c...or R11372 for a remanufactured one.
