Just got off the phone with a very reputable shop here in town and was quoted $1600 for the installation of a posi trac rear end and gears in my 72 Chevelle. It currently has 2.73 gears in the 8.2 housing. I was too shocked at ask what brand of posi trac and gears he was going to use and if the axle bearings and pinion bearing would be changed also. Does this seem like a fair price?
The shop is top notch and noted for their quality work. Maybe this is the going rate for such work, and I am just crazy. It just seems a bit high. What does the collective wisdom here think?

It's about right, slightly on the high side but,
$400-450 for the posi,
$175 for the gears
$150 for the install kit with all the bearings.
That's almost $800 in parts at their cost. Most shops mark up parts as much as 60%.

It's an all day job to rebuild a rear diff properly. Call it 8 hrs at $75/hr.

I used to set them up for $200 a pop and I've doubled my price over the last year because the time involved could be used to work on something else that is more profitable.

Eaton Posi $440, gears $175, installation kit $96. Labor varies by location.

Find yourself a 12 bolt thats already been rebuilt with gears and posi. Dump your 10.

Or just find one thats been freshened up with new bearings. Bet you in either scenario it will be same money or less.

When they open it up they may find that tou need new axles. They did on mine. All said and done I have about $2200 in my 12 bolt. I wish I would have sold it and just got a 9". Hint, hint.
