: best place for speedo repairs
bhawk Feb 4th, 10, 8:46 AM The speedometer on my 65 chevelle does not work properly. The car sat for 12 years before I restored it and now that I drive it, the speedo is slow to move up to speed and usually sticks at a low speed for a while, then may get up to the speed I'm travelling, say 60 mph, but then it is slow to lower to 0. So, I want to remove it and send it to a reputable speedo repair shop.
Do you have any recommendations for a good speedometer repair service for a 65?
thanks for your help guys.

blue67chevelle Feb 4th, 10, 11:51 AM Are you sure its not the speedo cable? If it sat for 12 yrs, possible the cable is sticking inside.
Rich-L79 Feb 4th, 10, 12:20 PM It is probably the cable. And if the speedometer itself is at fault, it would be a lot easier and less expensive to just change the speedometer. They are still fairly common, I probably have about half a dozen lying around.
bhawk Feb 4th, 10, 12:48 PM Rich, I was thinking that a used speedo may do the trick at way less price.
On the cable sticking issue, when I did my resto I am pretty sure I removed the cable from the outer sheath and lubed it with white lithium grease. So, I don't think it is cable. Another thing this speedo does, is that when you come to a stop, it may read say 20 mph for a while, then after it sits for a while the needle drops to zero. Basically the word "sluggish" comes to mind when I watch this speedo.
Rich, do you have a good speedo you wish to sell, if so PM me. Thanks all.
67shovel Feb 5th, 10, 8:07 AM Since you plan on replacing the speedo anyway, why not try to lube your old speedo. The right way would be to pull it and diassemble. But I would stick a WD-40 tip in the back where the cable goes and give it a quick spurt. Too much and you might get it showing form the front.
bhawk Feb 5th, 10, 8:49 AM The speedo is definately coming out onto the bench in a short while. Has anyone disassembled a speedo and lubed it?. My sense is that mine is just sticking by the way it acts. I will lube the cable again also. The downside is that it is a good bit of work to get it out and I might prefer to put a known working one back in.
smoke' em II Feb 5th, 10, 9:37 AM I have had real good luck with John at Redline gauge and clock repair. One to two day turn around time, very quick!
He fixed my '70 speedometer that had a bouncing needle and was hanging up (sticking). He stated the speedometer has a magnet inside it, that had metal shavings stuck to it, causing these problems to occur.

Rich-L79 Feb 5th, 10, 12:18 PM There is nothing to lube inside a speedometer. Grease or oil of any sort would probably mess it up further. The imporant thing is that the mechanism is clean inside and that the distance between the head that is moved by the cable and the head that gets magnetically moved that is attached to the needle is correct.
Is the odometer still working properly?
PM sent.
bhawk Feb 5th, 10, 4:23 PM odometer works fine. Interesting about shavings inside. When I get the cluster out I may try to look inside. I'll let you all know what I find.
Rich, got your PM and replied, thanks.
Chris R Feb 6th, 10, 7:17 PM Dont forget to try looking in your local phone book. There are a lot of these type of shops that do this work in many major cities. Dealerships and shops are typically what keep these shops in business.
