Hey All,
I read an article about electrolysis in the radiator and how to check for yourself. I followed the directions from the Radiator Reporter and found that I have a negative .20 volts in my anti-freeze. I am sure that the digital meter is on DC volts and that the negative probe was on the negative post of the battery. The positive probe was in the anti-freeze and not touching the side of the radiator. I checked this with the positive battery cable hooked up and with the positive battery cable off. I have the same negative .20 volts. As the probe stays in the anti-freeze, the negative volts slowly drop by a hundredth or so every few seconds. The battery voltage is 12.63. I should have positive current in the anti-freeze if I have a bad ground some place right? Maybe I have bad anti-freeze? The radiator has had a leek for several months so I am going to change it this spring. The anti-freeze is at least 3 or 4 years old and was in the car when I purchased it 3 years ago.
Any ideas?? Am I off base with this??:confused::confused:

Thanks for your help.
Marc:beers::beers:

I haven't tested for radiator voltage in quite a while. Yeah, I'd think you have worn-out coolant or bad grounds.

I found a link for radiator voltage testing:

This link describes the "Type B" electrolosys, which was the kind I was first introduced to twenty+ years ago.

Hey Schurkey,
Thanks for the info. I had seen the radiator reporter from another post when I did a search. The second site is good info. I checked tonight and after having the positive cable off the battery for a whole day, I still have voltage in the anti-freeze.:sad: I guess that I have bad coolant and will now change the heater coil along with the radiator.
thanks again, there is always a wealth of info out there!!:thumbsup:
