Not El Camino related but on my Caprice I had all the pads replaced back in December, 10k since then, and when coming to a stop going downhill the RH side squeals like crazy. Also when driving with the windows down I can hear a slight scraping sound on that side when the brakes aren't applied. Do I need a new caliper or am I due for pads again? I never drove a car needing brakes before so I wouldn't know. The other brakes seem fine but it takes more pressure to slow down than it does in my El Camino, unless the brakes are different sizes and the Caprice is that much heavier (I don't think it is by that much).

Could be you need pads, could just be dirt or rust. Pull the wheel and look at the pads to see how much is left of them. There is a metal tab on one of the pads which will hit the rotor and make noise to let you know the pads need replacing. The noise is to get you to look before you waste the pads and the rotor. If the pads look ok and the tab isnt touching the rotor, check the dust shield and see if that is touching the rotor. Spin the rotor by hand and look for the cause. If you dont see anything, could be pad dust or not enough "anti squeak" goo on the back of the pads during install, but I doubt that is it if you have noise with the wheel turning and no brakes applied. Even if your pads are only 10K old they could be shot, especially if the sliders on the caliper werent lubed properly. If that is the case you will see one pad worn much more than the other. Bottom line is you have to pull the wheel and look around.

Thanks Dave, good idea. I'll take a look and post back.

An easier way to check for brake pad wear is check the fluid level if it's down chances are the pads are worn. What happens is the pistons adjust to the wear taking fluid from the master cyl
