Hi,
Im converting my 72 Chevelle from a 3 spd auto to a 4-speed manual. I have been looking to find a used, but really nice hurst competition shifter for my swap. I have found a few but it seems that the competition series is car specific. Why is this? Is there really a differnence in the shift mechanism or is It becuse of different consoles and seat set-ups? I plan on just floor mounting mine without a console, so can I use any one that is made for a muncie?

The differences are normally the handle configuration.
Go on the Hurst site and you can find the late bolt on handle configurations that bolt to the same shift mechanism.

Ive bought a few shifters, make sure your shift levers are for the right year of your tranny, it makes a difference. If your running a bench seat, I think you want to make sure it loops around enough to clear the seat, if buckets I think you just need it to tilt back a bit to clear the dash, Check out the el camino section and you can see pics of a hurst supershifter in a elcamino. Thats a shifter with a stick thats straight up.
If your running bucket seats and think someday you may want a console, now would be the time to get the right shifter, so you only have to buy it once. jim

Hey Dan,

I was in the same boat you were a couple months back and I ended up looking for first, a cheap used hurst shifter. I found the actual shifter mechanism (no rods or anything) for 50 bucks on craigslist. I kept a look out, but ended up going to summit and just buying a new "installation kit" that they have.

I think the installation kit is like 125 and the actual shifter I found was 50.. so 175 seemed like a good enough deal over the $300+ the new ones are going for. This was a super shifter installation kit, but it did have all the amenities to fit the different year muncies, and borg warner.

First plan of action I would think is find out what year muncie you have

Thanks for all the advice. I had found a shifter on Craigslist that fit a 66-67 chevelle. It was a complete package and the guy only wanted 80 bucks for it. I would have bought it emediately but wasn't sure if it would fit. All the part numbers seem to be different for 66-67 and 68-69 70-72 etc....which leads me to believe that they are physically different and work differently, but if you think about it....how could they? They are all performing the same task. The only difference is which tranny you have right? I figured if you knew what tranny you were running and just mounting it on the floor with no interferance from seats or a console you should be fine. Am I right on this??? Or am I way off?? Any advice is much appreciated.

the later trans had a bolt going through the shift arms, the earlier trans had a stud sticking out of the shift arm boss, the holes in the shift arms are whats a different size. you can buy just the shift arms from summit for 20 bucks each. jim

Do note that the Hurst super shifter, which is a great shifter with near 4" throw, will require a larger hole in the floor. This is because the shifter mechanism that the handle bolts to sits higher on the trans. The shifter with T handle is only about 8". The shift rods that go from the shifter mechanism to the transmission side cover are larger and reduce flex and jamming. Use solid bushing on the ends of the rods, not the nylon ones. Great shifter though. Works well with a bench seat and has no dash interference. Center force dual friction clutch sets work fantastic. Put it in, adjust it, and forget about it. Light pedal pressure also.
