: 68/69 Front Coil Spring Help
onabudget Jun 29th, 04, 2:49 PM Recently a friend replaced his front coils in his 69 big block wagon, the parts store listing had MOOG # 5400. After putting the springs in, the front end was up so high his front tires were slanted out. He cut a coil and it brought it down about an inch, but its still too high.
I am in the middle of a 307 to 454 conversion in my 68 wagon, and need to replace the coils. I don't want to have this problem also.
I'm looking for springs that will let the front end sit at a nice height with the big block. The rear I will keep at the stock height, and would like to have a slight rake to it. I would rather not have to cut springs and have a crappy ride as a result.
Any suggestions and/or photos greatly appreciated.
ACLineman Jun 29th, 04, 4:09 PM Replaced the 307 with a 396 in my 69.
Changed front and rear springs with TRW coils.
Gave the guy at the parts counter my year model and that it was a BB.
Looks like stock height to me and I like he ride.
There's a picture (bad one) in my signiture
onabudget Jun 29th, 04, 4:31 PM Do you know what the part numbers are?? TRW and Moog have the same numbering I believe.
ACLineman Jun 29th, 04, 6:13 PM Not off the top of my head, let me dig through my reciepts and see if I can find it.

No luck on finding that reciept, sorry.
I got mine at advanced auto. Have them look up the year and application. I gave them all stock info (except for the small block to big block conversion) I just told them it is a BB.
Funny thing about these young parts guys, you go in for a wiper blade and they ask,
"does the car have air?, type of transmission?, 4 wheel drive?, color of vechile?," ETC......LOL
Like I said everything fit and sits fine.
68joker Jun 30th, 04, 5:55 PM having the same problem with my moog springs. Asked for small block springs and now the front is up and inch and a half higher. Looks like i'm at full throttle at all times. Not sure how I am going to handle the exchange. Hey Aclineman, were the old and new springs the same height?? Or would you happen to know the height(unsprung) of the new springs??

T-Man Jun 30th, 04, 9:23 PM You can use the same springs for an El Camino with a big block, same chassis as a wagon.

Side by side the old springs and the new one's were excatly the same height. Didn't bother taking measurments.
For the rears I ordered the "variable" springs (again same height as old ones) for my application, (69 Chevelle), Fronts were same app. just told them BB car and didn't get into telling them it was a sb to BB swap and all.
That just confuses them.
Hope this helps.
Ken K Oct 29th, 04, 1:53 AM The Moog #5400 springs are for a 1970 GTO with A/C and automatic transmission. A Pontiac V8 weighs less than a big block Chevy. I just installed a set of #5400 springs in a 68 Tempest wagon. The factory springs that came out of the wagon were 1 inch taller than the #5400 springs, they were the same wire diameter.
Bill Rose Oct 29th, 04, 11:01 AM I put new Moog front springs in the 68 a few days
ago b/c the front stance dropped too much. I got mine from GU. The number on the Moog box is 5374. I ordered BB no air springs and the stance is right where I want it..
This pic shows the height with the new springs. http://www.chevelles.com/showroom/71SSBB/SpringpicTC.jpg
ssal396 Oct 30th, 04, 10:35 AM 71ssbb, what did you do to raise the rear ride hight of your car, that's exactly how I want my 69 to sit..

Bill Rose Oct 30th, 04, 3:18 PM Scott...Stock rear Moog springs- CC501 and repro spiral shocks. Same shocks in the front with MOOG-5374 springs....
Ken K Oct 30th, 04, 4:51 PM CC501 are cargo coils or what is called variable rate springs. You can buy them from Northern Auto for $43.99 a pair.
rthlc Oct 31st, 04, 10:54 PM I pulled this info from a old Moog catalog.
