Should fit right in with the theme of the project quite nicely!

Nice Rich. I take it L79? What else would it be for you? Very cool.

No, the wagon has a hot rodded 427. This is not an L79 tach, take a closer look..... (Hint: the L79 tachs have a redline between 5600 and 5800.)

Should fit right in with the retro theme. Good score!

That almost looks like a 65 Impala/Caprice tach.

Weren't those knee knockers though? This is a factory in-dash unit of course.

Nice addition, specially if it looks original to the car.

The 65 Impala/Caprice tach was in a round pod at the right side of the instrument cluster. Some cars had a clock in that location, and some had a vaccum gauge.

The clock on a 65 Impala SS was down on the center console.

But none of that is relevant to your car I guess :) The tach will look sweet in your wagon.

My bad, Z16.

Actually, the Z16 and the L79 cars all used the same tach with a 6000 RPM range and a redline between 5400 and 5600. The standard issue tach had a redline between 5000 and 5200. The uber-rare 7000 RPM tachs have varying redlines (I've seen some at 5200, 5600, 6200 and 6400).

I guess I've never really become familiar with the big car dashes. Got any photos of the big car dashes with tachs in them?

Rich,

Is that tach the same size/configuration as a Chevelle tach?

It IS a Chevelle tach. This is NOT a reproduction. A recreation perhaps, but an original Chevelle tach nonetheless.

Have you never seen a 7000 RPM tach?

Just about a rare as hen's teeth, but they do exist. The last one pictured I personally pulled out of a clapped out '65 SS in a junkyard. Paid all of $10 for it. I traded it for about $1000 worth of NOS parts and cash. Best return on investment I've ever made.

Yes I have seen 7000 RPM tachs before but have never had one.
I misunderstood your first post and thought you got it out of a big Chevy.

Typically the '64 cars got the run of the mill 6K tachs. I've never personally seen a 7K tach in a '64.

Here's my theory on the 7K tachs. You may recall Chevy had plans to put the L76 365hp/327ci engine in the '64 Chevelles. It's also well known that they killed the project before any such cars were sold the public. My belief is that these tachs were tooled up for the expected L76 engines (solid lifter high RPM engines) but when the project was cancelled they had 7K tachs with no cars to put them in. Most appear to have had 5800 redlines which is about the same as L79s and who would notice the difference? GM isn't going to throw away good equipment so they either used up their small stock of 7K tachs in production or sold them over the counter. All those I've seen have appeared in '65 models but it wouldn't surprise me to see one show up in a late model year '64. In all the years I've been interested in these cars, I've only ever seen about half a dozen of these tachs and only one in person.
