: big block vs small block
myChevellelooksfast Jan 26th, 10, 10:50 PM so i have a choice to make big block or small block the 72 chevelle i bought came with a 327 3spd auto on the floor and its in good condition but i have a chance to buy a 427 with a 4spd in good condition also so what should i do i need help
rj67bu Jan 26th, 10, 11:03 PM with the big block you'll need new headers, motor mounts maybe upgrade the fuel system. what rearend do you have? 8.2 or 12 bolt. Of course if you beaf up the 327 these may also become inadequate. Are you a BB or SB guy or do you care? It's up to you
mmurphy77 Jan 26th, 10, 11:22 PM SB will be an easier, cheaper way to go as there is a small block there already, BUT! There's NOTHING like a BB and a 4-speed (I don't care how nasty your SB is). You won't stop thinking, "If I only went with the Big Block". JMO.
67shovel Jan 27th, 10, 8:14 AM Personally, I like small blocks with 4 speeds. Can you just buy the tranny? Gas is going up again, do you really want to stuff a big block in?

Thats why I went big block. And mine gets decent mileage for making 660 hp. Although I do have a 2.73 rear, but the horsies more than make up for it!

1966_L78 Jan 27th, 10, 12:37 PM I'd say it all depends on what YOU envision for the car... The 427 will probably be alot more fun than a 327, but there are the extra associated costs (exhaust, cooling, and gas).
It also depends on your budget and associated equipment (radiator, 12-bolt)...
The 4-speed can be fun, but IMO, it can get "old" and lead to more parts breakage (if you aren't gonna drive hard, then leave it alone)... Also, there are added costs to the manual trans swap (pedals and linkage, etc). Keeping the automatic, but with the 427, can still be fun, easier on other drivetrain parts...
For the past 20+ years, all my Chevelles were BB powered... Except my latest. Its a SB, but a 427 stroker...
cuisinartvette Jan 27th, 10, 1:43 PM Big lover of overbuilt small blocks but theres something about a BB/4 spd winding out that cant be replaced.
kh'67 Jan 27th, 10, 4:30 PM First thing I did was remove the small block and the auto out of my car :D
marks412 Jan 27th, 10, 5:18 PM If you plan on keeping the car, do what you see in the future. If thay are both stock engines, I would go with the 427. As far as the tranny goes, 4spd all the way!!!
cheveezies Jan 27th, 10, 10:44 PM i did the same as keith . pulled the mouse & the auto. i've got a rat 427 & a m - 20 muncie 4 - speed going in . 427 = sweet , sweet , music
