: Painting new inner fenders
71_super_nova Jan 26th, 10, 12:35 PM Hey guys, I have some new inner fenders (front) for my chevelle. they have that nice black coating/ finish on them. what do I need to to for paint prep? do I need to sand them at all? scuff them up? or just shoot primer over them.
Also what type of primer should I use? etching?
I have never painted before, so any help will be appreciated.
f14tomcat Jan 26th, 10, 1:00 PM Should be able to scuff with a scotch brite and primer with epoxy and then paint right over the primer, depending on the primer, you can wait an hour and paint over the primer without having to sand.....

Cool... thanks brother!
f14tomcat Jan 26th, 10, 1:05 PM I am assuming that the inner fenders are metal? If so then carry on, if made of plastic then you will need to go another route........

they are metal.
Also i am sanding down my fire wall, should I use the epoxy primaer as well?
Where can I find seam sealer? that stuff that line the rear wheel wells in the trunk?
oldtimeparts Jan 26th, 10, 3:23 PM I always powder coat the inner fenders, they are very durable that way
f14tomcat Jan 26th, 10, 3:46 PM Yes, use the epoxy primer on the firewall, most important thing on the firewall is to clean it several times with a grease and wax remover before primering. You can get
seam sealer at your local parts store, most of them anyway. I use 3m in a tube, works great.

That particular seam sealer is brushable seam sealer made by numerous companies, 3M, UPOL, etc. Also available in 2 part with a self mixing nozzle tip. Auto body supply stores carry autobody supplies. No, I'm not being sardonic.
