Where can I find info on master cylinder part numbers?

No one responded to my last post, so it must be harder than I thought. I just want a rebuilding kit.

I have an original 68 M/C but would rather keep the one on the car because it has bleeders on the M/C. The one on the car looks like the original, *except* for the bleeders. But I can't find any part numbers that match what is on the M/C (it's either "Y 5840845" or "5480485 Y", I was using a mirror to read the number, and got a little disoriented).

I've gotten some good info from gmpartsdirect.com, but I don't think their catalog goes back that far. Have you tried a dealer?

I checked on Froogle and a place called Rock Auto has the Wagner master cylinder kit for a '68 Chevelle (disk brakes) Part number F106624 for a price of $20.79 on their site.
If you want to look for yourself, try this link:

They have the various other master cylinder kits, too.

This car is a power drum setup. Unfortunately I have little info about the car's history. The MC is *probably* the same as any drum setup, just stuck onto a booster. I have an original MC but want to use the mystery MC with nice bleeders that's already on my car (but don't work too well). After searching for a couple days I was hoping that someone could use the ID number to make sure I'm getting the correct rebuild kit. I haven't tried a dealer... ours is pretty worthless even if you do have bankers hours. Maybe I'll try the Rock Auto kit and if it doesn't look right, I'll just suck it up, re-install, and re-bleed the system. It's weird no one has this part number (not even GMpartsdirect).

Thanks guys.

Keep in mind that the disk cylinder is different than the drum cylinder. The reservoirs are different and the bore diameter is different. That Rock Auto site indicates that the choice of diameters is 1inch and 1.125inch. Also, power brake cylinders are different from non-power as the pistons are drilled differently for the appropriate push rod.

I have a Raybestos drum brake rebuild kit sitting at home, I'm trying to unload.

Bought it at RockAuto, without understanding which one I was buying ... I have disc brakes.

I'd sell it for $10 if interested ... I actually have two. E-mail if interested.

Thanks, Neal

My 1976-dated parts book shows Delco number 175-133 as the kit for Delco number 174-252 master cylinder for "1968 All w/Pwr. Disc Brks". This is a 1 1/8 bore master, and the same kit (but a different number master cylinder) is used for '67. The master AND the kit is different in '69, though.

Do I recommend rebuilding your own master cylinder? Heck, NO. It's cheaper to get a rebuilt, which comes with a warranty, than to rebuild your own. The bleeder screws are nice, but NOT needed.

but he wants it to look "right".
i used to watch my grandpa rebuild master cylinders all the time- there really is nothing to them. a piston, a couple of springs (i think) and some o-rings all held in by a c clip.
take it apart, clean it up, run a hone thru it a couple of times, clean it again, and shove the thing back together.
