: New Moser Pinion Yoke for my 9"

Forgive me if this is covered somewhere I searched a bit and couldn't find it.

I have a Moser 9" Nodular case etc in my '66. When I built the car I didn't want to spend $ on driveling so I used a stock yoke (1310 U Joints). It has a stock pinion support with a steel ring girdle fabricated by Scribner. The diff was set-up with a solid spacer so I am able to change the yoke without affecting the set-up.

I ordered a new pinion yoke from Moser Part PY-200. Drained the lube, removed the stock yoke and compared it to the new yoke. External length is identical, however the new yoke is machined down an additional 3/16 of an inch or so where the not meets it. When I slide the new yoke on the splines are flush with the not surface.

It came with what appears to be a spacer I am assuming to use for exactly this situation. From what I can gather the new yoke is designed for a daytona support (larger bearings push it out slightly thus the reduced length).

Does this spacer go behind the yoke or between the nut and the yoke? The placement will affect my drive line length.

I almost purchased a Strange Yoke and with their yoke the tech said if a spacer was needed that it should be put behind the yoke. But it seems odd to slide a spacer in through the seal. However, since the splines barely come through the pinion it will be difficult to get it to stay in place properly when tightening the nut if it goes between the nut and yoke.

I would like to get this installed so I can get the measurements for my new drive line to the company before I leave town, otherwise I would wait and call Moser tomorrow.

After typing this out it makes the most sense to put it behind the yoke.

Thoughts?

The spacer goes between the yoke and the outer bearing. You are correct that this yoke is made for the Daytona pinion housing and the spacer is to adapt it to a standard pinion housing.

Just one question, if you spent the money on a nodular case, why didn't you get the stronger Daytona pinion housing?

Thanks for the confirmation Sir... ahh that is a good question, the consensus when I was putting it togeather was that the stock pinion support with the reinforcement ring was plenty for what I planned on doing with it. In hindsight I should have done it...

The whole 9" wasn't in th original budget .. I planned on swapping gears in my 10.2 bolt originally but upon disassembly the bearings had spun on the old factory posi- so the 9" was added.

Curious what is the added cost?

The added cost of the Daytona pinion housing? About $100 plus bearings.

Wow that is pretty insignificant - looks like I blew it there.

Well I went to slip the spacer over the pinion, it slides over the splines and inside the support but as the splines get closer to the bearing they taper out and increase in diameter. The spacer needs to be the same ID as the bearing and it is too small. I am at a loss now. Any ideas?

Thanks - Daniel

I haven't seen one that didn't fit. Is it a big difference between the sizes? Maybe it's just a little tight and will push on.

I tried to snap a picture- it is pretty big difference. I used a bit of emery cloth on the inside surface of the spacer and heated it up hoping it would pop on. but it stops right at where the splines start to fade out toward the bearing

Can you measure the ID of the spacer?

I measured it and it was 1.25" (if memory serves me well) I called Moser and they told me that unlike strange it was intended as a washer to be used between the nut and the yoke and not between the yoke and the bearing. Went I get home this weekend I will be able to install and measure fro my new aluminum drive shaft!

Thanks big gear head! I have read many of your support posts and appreciate your input on this one~
