: Air Shocks vs Gas Shocks
rett69 Oct 16th, 03, 10:56 AM I am in the process of replacing my existing air shocks on my 70 Chevelle. I have L60-15 tires on the back and have had to be able to raise the rear end of the car slightly so the fender does not rub on the side of the tire. The old air shocks have become spongy and now I would like to get a stiffer ride. Should I change to a gas shock or is anyone familiar with how new air shocks are. I'm sure the technology has changed since 1974 when I installed the old ones. Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks for your help.
Olle Oct 16th, 03, 8:39 PM I put gas shocks on my -69 a while ago, and just changing from the stock type to relatively inexpensive gas shocks from Auto Zone was a great improvement. If I were to raise the rear of the car, I wouldn't go with air shocks, as they transfer the load to the shock mounts, which eventually could cause damage. Air Rides in the springs seem to be a better alternative, haven't used them myself, but that's what I'd go with. I'm sure someone who have used them can verify that they work well.
jocww Oct 18th, 03, 1:27 AM i use air shocks to get the rake in teh elcamino
'69Larry Oct 19th, 03, 4:30 PM Gas shocks do nothing for ride height. If you want to keep the rear up a little you're limited to new springs or air shocks. Air bags also don't do a whole lot for ride height, though they'll certainly stiffen up the rear suspension. Using moderately inflated air shocks isn't going to hurt anything.
Bob West Oct 19th, 03, 5:00 PM how much lift do you need? You can get 2-3 inches from air bags, and they are no stiffer than air shocks. I'd rather have the weight supported by spring perches than shock mounts,I've broken them on a 66 chevelle with air shocks before, back in the day of M50x14 and the stink bug look.
