: What kind of oil do you guys run in your chevelles?
Super470 Jan 22nd, 10, 12:07 PM Okay, I know that this is a question many people will have a diferent answer too, so I thought I would try to get everyone's opinion. I just used parts store oil in my '70 LS-5 and afterwards found out it is not right. Do you guys run synthetics? Special oils designed and priced for specialty clasic cars? Conventionals with zinc or synthetics with zinc? Or just zinc additive. What about theose mixed in additive lubricants?
Thanks for the advice guys!!!
Alwhite00 Jan 22nd, 10, 12:12 PM I run Mobil-1 in mine, Working good so far. Change it once a year.

Robinls5 Jan 22nd, 10, 12:52 PM I have a driver LS-5 (468) and a one owner LS-5 (Trailer car ). I run Brad Penn Racing oil in both, I have been using this for five years. I has the Zinc & Phos. that a flat tappet cam needs.
I put about 3-5000 miles on the 468 a year, Its a 70 SS 454 Red Sta. Wgn. This oil is just fine for me, NO changes are in the future.

matt's66 Jan 22nd, 10, 10:35 PM 20w-50 auto parts store brand or whatever is on sale with a bottle of ZDDPlus. I'm not sold on synthetics and have seen engines go 250,000 miles plus using cheap-o oil with religious oil changes.
Belair Jan 22nd, 10, 10:41 PM John Deere Torqueguard 50+, Don't laugh, it's the same as Rotella T 15w40. I have over 100,000+ plus miles on the mild built 350 in my '55 with many miles left to go. I will also run this in my 430hp 396 roller motor.

Me too. Don't need anything thicker if you build the engine right.
Robinls5 Jan 24th, 10, 2:17 PM Trivia:
The Delo & Rotella oils? As of lately the Zinc & Phos. are dropping like a rock and will soon be DIscontinued in the standard Diesel engine oils. WHY? ALL new trucks, Class 7 engines have " Cat " converters. The Zinc & Phos. will plug up a converter.
That is one of the reasons you can NO LONGER buy a Caterpillar Engine for your Peterbuilt, KW, Freightliner,ETC.
Caterpillar would have to RE-Design the engine to function with a Cat. Converter. So the era of " Kitty Cats - Dozer Diesels - Pussy Power - Cat Powered - are gone. No more " CAT " engines in Tractor Trailers. My buddy had a pumped up Cummins, And on his hood he had it lettered " Here Kitty Kitty Kitty "
Then again , Most engines today are Roller Engines.

matt's66 Jan 24th, 10, 6:20 PM Thinner oil is better contrary to the old school idea that thicker is better. Pressure is resistance of flow. A thinner oil flows better, thus gets to moving parts quicker (especially up top) and disipates heat better. However in the case of a worn out engine with large clearances, a thinner oil won't form that cushion between the bearings and journals. In this case, using a thicker oil will keep it running long enough to get your ducks in a row, delaying the inevitable. My cousin has a Chevy van with a Vortec 350 that has a lower end knock when warm. He only has about 5 psi when idling. I advised him to run something heavier than 5w-30 such as 10w-40 or 20w-50 with a quart of Lucas which he did. He was amazed. No more knock. He is also aware that this is just a Band-Aid.
